I just purchased Gary Friedman’s guide to the Sony A9. I had been looking for something richer than on the Web, but couldn't find what I was looking for. Barnes and Noble bookstore was not carrying photo guides on their shelves like they used to and even when they did, it was mostly for Canon and Nikon cameras. Gary’s guide is over 560 pages and very, very helpful to me. Check it out if you happen to be interested in a pragmatic guide that covers his set up(s) and does a great job of explaining the many menu options. I can’t put it down.

I have heard that you should never put them in a dryer to dry. Always just air dry.

I saw in the USA Today that this camera was going to feature a “whopping” 24mm-600mm zoom lens. Does anyone know if it will fit on a Sony mirrorless body? Thanks.

I have Sony a7rii and a9 and Leica M-P 240 all mirrorless. I also have a bunch of great Canon lenses. My preference is to use lenses made for the camera and feel that adapters lessen either the quality of the pictures, the function of the lens or camera or both. Can’t prove it, but that is my position and I am sticking with it!

Was a Canon guy; bought Nikon camera for daughter's travels in Europe- she lived with families in Sienna, Dresden, and Glenoble.

Several years ago, while holding my spot at the Iwo Jima Memorial from 6am until the fireworks on the 4th. I met a guy who came early, set up next to me and was a fellow sufferer in a miserable day of quite heavy rain. He was an AP photographer, assigned to many Presidential One types of flights and we spent an absolute fun day talking about photography he said I might like to look at the Sony mirrorless A7RII - I never looked back. I have it and the A9.

May I repeat, from where in Lightroom are you getting your readings, please?

Sorry, I misspoke, I got confused- the readings came from Capture One Pro

245 is the highest value that will show detail. Any higher value will appear washed out.

Hence for areas where you do want detail that is the correct maximum brightness. Spectral reflections, thin edges, solid areas with no detail, etc can be allowed to be brighter.

An example would be a bright flower picture where none of the pedal surface should be over 245, but individual pixels along the pedal edges might be brighter, for example after sharpening. The shiny spots on a face in a portrait are another where 245 is max.

Thanks-that is exactly what I was looking for in an answer- perfectly on point and very helpful!

I bracket my photos; I expose to the right; and as a consequence, I get several choices of exposures to choose from. The first photo that shows a slight tinge of red has a reading around 245; even a solid red can read 250-255. My question is which of several photos would you generally (I know, it depends...) pick as your best choice - the closest to showing any signs of overexposure but no red at all, one showing the slightest of pink/red; or would you choose the best exposure some other way?

I am limiting my question to exposure - not to any other factor or consideration. I know monitor calibration may be a factor in this, but let's just limit this to the question what is the highest reading between 0 and 255 that I should accept when hovering my mouse over the lightest part of my photo?

Thanks for your helpful responses, I learn so much from the UHH-ers!

Whatever happened to bracketing? You don't know what that means? Tsk.

I didn't mention bracketing because I did not want to delute the issue re EV. I am aware of the power and utility of bracketing and use it regularly

Not safe to create a general comp of EC for your camera. Get in the habit of looking at the histogram for each image you create and adjust the EC as needed. My 2 cents.

Thanks!!!

I do agree with the previous advice of Pixelstan, HOWEVER, I have discovered that sometimes your metering type will cause either darker or lighter exposures, and the application of EC in a "general sense" will be applicable during a particular shoot or location.

Thanks for your comment.

Do you need to determine EC by individual situations or is it safe to create a general one for the camera that will work in most instances? Thanks for your help.
