Thanks all for the comments. I just had to vent some of my frustration about not being able to get my gardening done.

Looks like you got a flowering ground cover - lucky you. Why tear out. Just clear patches for to plant annuals or perenials and let plant nature take over. That ground cover will save you from having to spread mulch, will shade the soil and help new plants' roots from baking.

That's supposed to be in corn and broccoli and lettuce and tomatoes, etc. The hen bane is a real pest around here. Farmers are constantly battling it and the violets are almost as bad, they'll completely take over any place they can get started.

Interesting. Tell them to go some other place and stay out of your garden

I wish I could, but they don't listen

This is supposed to be my garden, but I haven't been able to till it and the weeds are taking over. Taken with a Nikon D7000 w/ AF-S Nikkor 55-300 MM lens. I really wanted to take the second one from a worms eye view, but my knees won't let me get down there.

It sounds like no on knows where the name came from.

Ever since I found this site I've wondered why the name Ugly Hedgehog. I know that hedgehogs are native to Europe, Asia and Africa, but not the Americas. But they are popular with a lot of people as pets because they are so "cute." So, why Ugly Hedgehog?

Enjoyed that Mullumby,

We're having our 65th and last in July. I hope there's more than 5 or 6 of us there.

To all,

Thanks for all the suggestions. there were a couple of formats I had never heard of. One that interests me is FLIF. Sounds great. I just hope that it goes over and will be supported by a lot of programs.

What"s a good lossless file format to put photos in? I keep mine in RAW format, but I often convert to send to other people. JPEG isn't good if they want to do anything with them other than view or print because of the loss every time you re-save. I hate to use TIFF because the files are so huge. Is there another lossless format that isn't so big that people who can't use the RAW files can use?

My wife and I took a trip to Alaska with my daughter and her housemate a few years ago. I insisted we had to go to Kodiak because I wanted to see those big brown bears. There, we flew to the bear sanctuary. Afterwards we rented a SUV and drove to all the spots from one end of the island to the other. My daughter hadn’t been enthusiastic about going to Kodiak, but afterwards both girls said that was one of the two best parts of the trip – even better than Denali.

Are you sure? outgassed? do you carry lens cleaner/ or any other chemical that might have spilled? The foam and soft material would hold it against the plastic andr affect it in a way a simple quick wipe would not. Does you wife wear nail polish ? Acetone will do this.

I did hear of couches shipped from China treated with an anti fungal so they wouldn't arrive ruined on board ships in containers... It was only discovered when people were showing up with weird rashes that turned out to be chemical burns. Someone noticed a pattern. So may not be the manufacturer at all, but the shippers!. Who knows. Freakin' Chinese don't care about anybody... its the wild west over there.

In order to attack that much plastic, there would have to be some heavy duty gassing, or my suspicion would be something leaked, your bag sopped it up, and held it in place... and you didn't know it for a few days.

Do this, as long as the lens is toast, put it back in and see what happens. If it damages it again- now you can go after them and have them replace it!
Are you sure? outgassed? do you carry lens cleaner... (show quote)

Richie,

This happened several years ago. When it happened I suspected outgassing and I took a sniff inside the bag. There was a very distinct chemical odor. In a few weeks the odor was gone, so I assumed it was now safe to use and I've been using it ever since. I don't carry any kind of liquids in my camera bag

I've quit thinking about getting it repaired. Besides all the advice I've gotten here, Authorized Camera has told me it wouldn't be worth it.

If I can figure out a way to get it extended out to 300mm, I'd put a 2x adapter on it and just keep for an extra long fixed lens.

Are you sure it is 75 - 300 and not 70 - 300?
Thanks,

I missed your comment/question going through responses the first time.

Yes I'm sure; it is 75-300.

I appreciate your suggestion about my homeowner's insurance. I hadn't thought about that.

can someone explain to me how a camera bag can ruin a lens?

I can only be about 99% certain of what happened, but this never happened before in any bag. When I got this new bag I had my camera with this lens attached in the bag. When I removed it to use it felt sticky and was very difficult to zoom. It wasn't very long until I couldn't zoom it at all. I know enough about the chemistry to know that outgassing of some of the materials in the bag could cause this.
