OMG! I couldn't believe it. I too order stuff from B&H and have never had a problem.

I find these little birds very hard to capture. Its not often they sit still for more than a few seconds...today I got lucky.

Try adjusting the EV from -.3 to - 2.0 to prevent burned out highlights from the snow and bright background.

Among the UHH members who started out using manual mode either by choice or because that was the only mode that was available at the time. How long did it take you to learn how to use it?
Among those who started out with one of the auto mode (full Auto, P, A or S) how long did it take you to learn how to use the camera in manual?
I am not Chris T but I can still ask survey question can I?

Probably about an hour. I had read several books and understood the exposure triangle and depth of field. So when I got a film SLR you could SEE the effects of focal length, depth of field ect in the viewfinder. Now with digital you can add a third "auto" function ISO. The first day with my D750 I tried AUTO, A, M, S, P and several "scene" modes. I read the manual too! I shoot A for macro and depth of field control, S for action and BIF. Manual when time and conditions permit like fireworks and landscapes, Full Auto sometimes when on the go. Scene modes if I think it will work better in certain situations like sunsets or beach/snow. Don't limit yourself. Use all the tools the manufacturer built in if they work for you! I always shoot RAW+Jpg also.

Don't have enough room on PC for raw.

Get an external hard drive. They are cheap enough these days.

Thanks, r.grossner. I splurged on the D500 yesterday, so after my wife gets over that expenditure, I'll look at acquiring the G2. With a limited budget, I have to take baby steps! :-)

The G2 is also scary sharp at 150mm. This GBH was trying to steal my bait shrimp while I was fishing so I grabbed the G2 which was at 600mm and got a head shot. Full auto Jpg no PP hand held. Missed the eye focus by a smidge in my haste.

the original tamron is ok up to 550mm , after that it looses sharpness .the G2 does not .

Agree. My G2 is better at 600 than a G1 or a Sigma C

I've been following the posts from the Hoggers for several months and found this blog to be a source of useful information. As for myself I have a Nikon 7100 with 55mm, 200mm, 300mm and 600mm telephoto lens. I started with a 3000, then 3100 then 5300 before getting a 7100. My favorite subjects are animals, landscapes, lighthouses, sunsets, moonshots, ship, planes and flight. Flight meaning birds to jets. I like a challenge. While I took classes on-line and in person most of my learning has been through mistakes. Manual mode is my preferred method of capturing images. I've experimented with other modes but most of the time the results have been lacking. I live in Charleston, SC which provides lots of subjects and I'm semi or maybe fully retired. I look forward to being a contributing member when and if I think I have something worthwhile to say. And, I will be picking brains of the many resident experts.
