Thank you very much. Your comments helped me.
Do you have any thoughts about the Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 ?

I have a Canon EFS 18-55mm lens, and I really like the zoom range.  Of 4 lenses, it is my always-attached lens.

But I want a lens for higher quality, with zoom capability in that range.  90% of my photos are in the 20-40mm range.

So, I have looked at two lenses -
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 L

But price is the issue.
Does anybody out there suggest a high quality lens that zooms somewhere around 18-55mm???

Thank you, but here is my confusion.
I put my camera on a tripod and aimed at a test subject with a well-defined area - a book cover.
1. First picture was shot with a Canon EF-S 18-55mm lens, set at 50mm.
2. Second picture with the Canon EF 50mm.

I get the same picture.
The way I interpret your answer, I should zoom the first picture to 80mm in order to match the shots.

I have the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lens, and use it with my Canon 70D.
I have several other lenses, but this is reserved for portraits and miscellaneous detail work.
After many years of amateur photography, I am trying to understand lens specifications at a deeper level.
Questions:
1. This is listed as a "Prime" lens. What does that really mean? How does that compare to the Canon "L" series lenses?
2. In a review of this lens, it implies that this is a full-frame lens and presents a 80mm field-of-view on an APS-C camera.
But it appears to act like a 50mm lens on my Canon 70D. I'm confused. Is the review incorrect? Or am I reading it wrong?

Thank you for your help.

I recently upgraded from a Canon T4i to the Canon 70D. I am busily learning all the new functionality.
So here's a question for someone out there who already knows the intricacies of this wonderful camera.
In the manual, p. 170, it seems to say that when you are set for Evaluative Metering, and you press the AE Lock, then the exposure is locked based on the lighting at the chosen AF point.
SO, in the attached picture, the exposure would be locked based on the left side of the picture. Is that correct? If so, that is really handy.

Left Zone AF
