the family had some kind of Kodaks, but my first camera was a used Vollenda split 127 folder with a 1/300 sec and a f3.5 lens. No rangefinder. It taught me to use available light, since there was no flash.
Next came an Argus C3. Shot a couple of weddings with it. Don't know what happened to it, Ya know high school and girls and beer.

Then a Kodak Signet 40 with which I took some Downtown Christmas Pics with Tungsten Ectachrome Iso 160 Ca. 1958.

I got my hands on a Exaxta VX 1000 in 1958 and thought it was the most beautiful mechanical object I ever saw or touched in my life. The sounds it made with timers, shutters, and during exposure were almost overwhelming. I actually got to make some pics. with it. Not working as a photographer, and starting a family, I started saving and got an SLR 6 years later.

I'm as old as Verichrome Pan. BW was all we had. If we had a darkroom we could do a lot of interesting things. Then came Kodacolor and everybody went to drugstore prints. Now we have digital editing and the fun has begun. I'm sending an an example of a shot I just think looks better in BW.

Arcsoft is easier to use, but not as comprehensive as Photoshop, and reasonably priced.

here is a couple of postprosessing tries done on Arcsoft photostudio 6. A lack of contrast in the subject is part of the problem

Some images lend themselves to square crops, I think this one does. It shows where he is, and what he is doing. I like it.

Kids can get into photography at an early age. When I was 10 in 1945. I hung around the neighborhood camera shop, they had them then, and read all the free manufacturers hand outs and asked a lot of questions. Soon I got a used German folder, split 127, set up a darkroom, and started having fun. All self taught. So it depends on the kid. Some are ready for an SLR and a 600, and others wouldn't know which end to pick up.

Just don't make 'em crunchy, which I tend to do once in a while.

If the full frame isn't what you want, try cropping out the foreground and cloning out the light pole. If the shot is a record of your vacation leave it alone. If you want a great landscape crop it.
