I was at Moss Landing near Monterey this weekend. A lot of seagulls around. Apparently there was a shortage of perches.
Caught the sun just going down as a pelican dove for a meal.
We were at Moss Landing just north of Monterey on Sunday. We noticed a large otter and a harbor seal. At first we thought they were playing together. Then we noticed that the seal was dead. The otter would grasp the seal by the head, swim backwards for a few feet and then dive with the seal. The seal would float to the surface about 10 seconds later and then a few seconds later the otter would appear. The otter would eat whatever he/she had found on the bottom. After a few minutes he/she would grab the seal and repeat the same dive with the seal in tow. We spent about 45 minutes watching the otter dive with the seal at least 20 or more times. I've never witnessed something like that. The otter was always gentle with the seal. Never once did we see the otter feeding on the seal. Anybody have any ideas why the otter was displaying this type of behavior?
The seagull on top apparently wanted this prime perch. He landed on the back of the gull on the bottom pecking and screeching at him until the one on the bottom flew off.
Thank you both for your kind comments.
Thousands of ducks, swans, cranes, geese and more at the preserve last week. A great place to bird watch and take photographs. The Egret was trying to attract a female. She wasn't receptive.
Bought my first camera in Hong Kong in 1971. I was on a Westpac cruise during Vietnam. I was on the aircraft carrier Constellation. I love airplanes and what better place than a carrier to photograph planes. Just needed a camera. Bought a Pentax.
Found this hawk sitting on a fence post. As I got closer he took off. I was able to capture him in flight.
Watched this otter eat for over 15 minutes. He brought up a crab that wasn't in the mood to be dinner. It bit him on the lip and then crawled down his stomach and slipped back into the water.
The grey and white seagull was going after the brown one. Caught them in almost the same position.
Pelicans at Moss Landing in California near Monterey. They were diving for fish from about 30 feet above the water. Amazing to watch them crash into the water and come up with dinner.
No, the bull didn't get him but it was close. Those guys helping out there really earn their money. I think that line of work is very scary. Wouldn't find me out there! Thanks for your comments.
PCRA Rodeo in Central California. Hot day! Over 103. Great action though.
3 seconds into an 8 second ride.
