Only problem I have with that statement is that I still find the words "good zoom" to be something of an oxymoron....

And Lord, I've tried a lot of zooms.

Good advice. With the money you save put it toward a good zoom.

I have an SB-400 and an SB-600. The SB-400 is more than adequate for most situations I am in. It is discontinued, but can still be found.

The Sb-600 is cool because it will do iTTL and the newest tricks, and will also do basic TTL so it can work on my FA.
But it is large.

A D3200 and its kit lens (18-50) will use less than half your budget, once the D3300 is fully announced and in the channel.

Buy a second lens of your choice (I'd suggest a fast 50mm, or a moderate tele, depending on what you want to shoot), and a camera bag, and get shooting!

Good luck,
Dave

Pretty much what I decided - the 50mm 1.4D or G is out, for now.

Apparently the 35mm F1.8 FX has been announced at $599 shipping 2/20.

35 (or even 24) is not wide enough; I'm waiting for the upgraded 20mm. In the meantime, I'm gonna play with the 105mm and 135mm DCs, since I have noting fast longer than 85mm, and my 70-300G only rates a DxO 20....

Wow - maybe I should save for a trip to New Zealand! That is some pretty country, and the photo neat too, given all the differing terrain. That 24mm looks like a winner!

Yes, that was on my D90. :-) And I guess I'll have to start calling the lens a 35mm f1.8G DX if the rumors are true about Nikon announcing a new FX 35mm f1.8G in the next few weeks....

It does equally nice things on my wife's D40.

The 35mm f1.8G is a superb lens, and the one that finally taught me to leave zooms alone. It makes fabulous photos on my D90.

In this case, I think Kenny Rock is correct. Click on the download of the photo to enlarge and see what this lens can do.

Family pic, DxO 6.0 autocorrection only

OK, I've done lots of research and the 50mm is not the lens to upgrade. :) I'll wait for an affordable upgrade to my 35mm f2D or my 24 f2.8D.

So, now I'm thinking of filling holes - either a 105mm or a 135mm. Maybe one of the DC Nikkors?

Woops! Yes, the 4x5 is what I was thinking of... The 8x10 would be a Deardorff.

Although there is not such thing as an 8x10 speed graphic, good point. I tried to make a similar point earlier as I shoot medium format and large format. The Canon/ Nikon argument is pointless.

When I am travelling, I find weight to be a premium concern. I use the 24-85mm in that case on my D610, and stick a 35mm F1.4G on either my D90 or my wife's D40.

I don't know of a great DX lens that matches that range, however; I agree the 18-200 is too soft and got rid of mine when I got the D610.

Primes FTW!
Why not A?
I'll let you know what I think about DxO after a few weeks.
Yay for FX, another reason to shoot A--it's all about DoF, especially if you've also got fast primes.
Sure, it won't be about the gear, says the guy swapping an f/1.8 for a f/1.4. :-P

Nice list of lessons.

I meant A and S, and not just using P :)
I'm keeping the 50 1.8 for use on the FA and D90. I just want f1.4. Sometimes, it is about the gear, especially if new gear gets you out to shoot more!

I returned from zooms to primes, and learned to walk to frame again, after a few years of zooms.

I learned to use a DSLR like an SLR in P and S mode to get the shots I wanted.

I got DxO v9 - a big upgrade from v6.

I got my first FX camera - a D610. Big step up from my D90, and I returned a Nikon FA to my stable.

Best advice? Learn to shoot what you have, then ask what you can do better; likely, it won't be gear.

This is a five part multi-faceted question:

What element of composition did you utilize?

What technical skill/knowledge did you use/employ?

What new PP tool/technique did you learn?

What new "toy" (tool) did you purchase (or make) that took your images to "the next level"?

Best advice received from a Hogger?

At some point, I'll share mine.... just don't want to "muddy the waters".

That is what I did with mine when the switch got wonky.

I'm sure you will be fine - mine is going strong.

I need it :) About once or twice a year. I shoot black cats in coal bins on moonless nights at midnight. ;)

The D I could use on my FA as well, The G just on my digital bodies.

It is a GAS buy, tho, you are right.
