Now that I read your post, you are surely wrong.

Did you mean to post this to Chit Chat?

No! I thought about it for 2 seconds and decided it belongs here.
I relate it to both taking pictures and editing pictures. Perhaps you didn't read what was said?
I could have posted it in any of a wide number of forums, and I chose this one.

Often, when taking pictures you don't see what was in the frame when you snap the shutter. Sometimes you get photobombed, sometimes you just didn't see the tree for the forest. Also when editing, you can find stuff you missed if you go back the next day and see things you missed. General Chit Chat was not correct for this post.
Thanks for trying to help though.

First, the second baseman needs his hand to be where the ball is?
Any swiping in this case was too late, runner was already safe.

Great photo captures of the action.

Looking at this photo reveals more and more items of interest.
Probably has a lot to do with how we miss things both taking pictures and editing those pictures.

How does this compare with anything?
539 download and 24 upload - from Spectrum.

I've been keeping track on a spreadsheet for years and use a variety of sites.
I doubt I need anything near these reported speeds. Lot's of variables when hooking up to a web site.

Nice ones. The first two make me want to be there. The next two, not so much.

I also wonder who does the counting. The world’s fastest camera supposedly shoots 3 TRILLION frames per second. Is there a guy counting the frames? And if so does he start over if he misses a few frames at the two and a half triiion mark?

I shouldn't say this cause it's from memory, recent memory which is fading fast...
I was watching something the other day, I think it was on measuring the speed of light, or something like that and they said the camera used was capable of a million frames/sec. I thought hmmm, that's AWFULL fast. 3 Trillion frames/sec I have to question, I doubted a million and frankly would need some in depth explanation on how that could be done.

I am in the group of people who don’t say anything unless it’s nice. I don’t appreciate nasty comments from snarky, grumpy folks.

There is a far cry from those offering free help and nasty comments from snarky grumpy folks.

My experience is when I'm offered suggestions they have never been nasty, snarky or containing disparaging remarks. The very rare exceptions occur when in a spirited discussion over some issue and some clown goes through your archives looking for a photo specifically to "disparage." There are very very few UHH'ers that simply trash a photo. If someone says nice pic but a little dark to me... well that's hardly disparaging.

I've been advised numerous times when my horizons were crooked and I NEVER asked. Just this one thing has helped me pay more attention to horizons, both when editing and taking a photo.

I'll be dammed if I'd remotely consider chastising a fellow hog for taking time to provide free suggestions/help/critique. Further, I can't see how anyone could get mad about that? Even further, it's EXTREMLY rare for someone to get nasty and gripe when offered free, unsolicited critique, even in the gallery. It happens, but is so rare it's insignificant.

I’m sure I don’t believe the statement about the number of trees outnumbering the stars in the universe. We don’t know how many stars there are in the universe so the statement is someone’s opinion. I do believe that there are most likely more stars in the universe than there are square inches of land on Earth, the minimum amount of area assumed to be needed to seed a tree.
Stan

I've heard numerous times there are more stars out there than grains of sand on earth. When I hear this crap I always wonder who did all this counting?
Same with distances. A million billion light years away...Some of these numbers thrown around are hard to believe, even if true, and again, who did all the counting? The new James Web Telescope seems to be showing lot's of the past "counters" were in fact, wrong.

As you implied, the Gallery is for posting, and the Analysis section for analysis. People should be able to post pictures that they want to post without fear of others saying they are awful. If this were a site for professional photographers, maybe your criticism would apply. Are people going to hesitate to post pictures they like because someone will call them awful?

It would be rare for anyone to simply state a posted picture is awful. C&C is almost always preceded by compliments. I've seen some awful pictures posted, and they are seldom called awful by anyone. For the most part no comments at all or if any, praise, which is what the OP of this thread is talking about.

I can only speak for myself, but I don't post a lot of pictures here because I recognize my photo's just aren't all that great. What prevents me personally from posting more pictures is people like billnikon who's photo's are spectacular. There are a handful of others just as good and that's what I think keeps most from posting lots of pictures. FEAR of someone offering help is not likely a reason not to post up one of their masterpieces.

Oh no. People having fun. They should know better.

There is very little new information being posted. Anyone who is really looking to be helpful would have started a new thread by now, specified what the thread is about, and monitored it.

If only NEW information was posted, this forum would have died shortly after startup.

Those with superior knowledge and experience should consider creating teaching topics. Years ago, we would see a few now and then. I remember one series in main discussion on composition (and critique thereof).

For Your Consideration did quite a few. In 2017, there were five or six of us who collaborated on a 4-part series about light.

Post Processing Forum used to have weekly challenges designed to test your pp skills, with a "judge" who knew a great deal about pp!

Agree with all the above. For Your Consideration now has weekly photo editing competition I sometimes participate in. Not much discussion around why people vote for one vs another, so the learning process is limited. Anyhow, I really am too old now to stay focused much on long teaching courses on anything, including photography.

I like it when someone posts a picture and someone makes a couple of comments pro or con about the photo. Often, being weak in the artsy end of photography these brief comments help a lot. I don't think they hurt anyone, even if not specifically solicited. Naturally how your critique is presented may hurt ones feelings, but most people, particularly in the HOG, thats not the case.

Kindness in critiques is important. If ones comments are hurtful rather than helpful, well that's a different issue I think. Even when that happens it's normally not intentional.

I'll state again, I think it's rare when a person posting a photo in the Gallery gets all up tight when a fellow hogger offers free help. If it's meant to be helpful, why would you get your panties in a bunch? Most just don't, a few are just... weird.

You say: My philosophy: Anything posted in a public forum is up for discussion.

You can philosophize all you want as long as you comply with Admin's Forum rules. Folks who don't want to follow the rules shouldn't be here.

Perhaps you missed my last sentence:
"Admin. philosophy: Doesn't need to conform to yours or mine."
There are a number of Admin. rules that conflict with my philosophy, where did I ever say I won't follow admin. rules?
