So, my old laptop has died and I'd like to replace it. I'll admit right here that I'm completely computer illiterate, so any help would be much appreciated. To get started, I really don't have a lot of cash to spend, (perhaps around $500 ish). I realize that's not much for a top of the line machine, so I'm happy to look at used/refurbished, and I already have a few places in mind for getting one. My problem is that I really don't know what specs I should be looking for, such as speed, type of processor, OS, memory, brand, and anything else I may have missed. I really know next to nothing about this subject, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help, all the best, and hope you have a great day!
Ray.
So, my old laptop has died and I'd like to replace... (show quote)

I've had great success with three computers over the past many years, buying ''refurbs'' from TIGER DIRECT.COM
I've purchased the Desktop computer I've been using now for over 7 years plus two laptops. All working great.

You did great, making your own Enlarger! Very creative. I remember my very first one... it was a 'TestRite'. Not fancy but I sure was tickled to have it! I think I was 16 or 17 years old then, and I wasn't careful about reading the Ad... it came with no lens! Eventually bought the lens but always figured I got bamboozled on that deal:o)
Been through 5 or 6 Enlargers over the years since then. Pushing 88 now but still enjoying the hobby. Computers sure made it even more enjoyable. Thanks for the reply.
Hang in there,

Thanks for viewing the video and your comments. Obviously it was a very condensed and abbreviated demo. Mainly to show the process. I should have carried it a bit further, showing how to 'clean up' the facial hair, etc. It's certainly a learning process isn't it? I've dabbled with many areas of Photography for well over 75 years... since I was around 13-14 yrs. old and have learned one thing, and that is that I still have much to learn:O) I appreciate your comments.

Interesting. But I used to do it with pencils especially made for coloring portraits. Still have them around somewhere. The sepia toned pictures worked much better that the black and white.

That's interesting GHS58, I'd be interested in seeing some of your work. I find Elements a good way of passing time and learning new things is always welcome.

You really shouldn't work directly on the background Joe for a lot of very good reasons.

Fotoartist you are absolutely correct. Actually I was working on a 'copy' of the original but I should have pointed that out by actually doing a copy during the tutorial. Thanks for pointing that out.

Thank you. That was most helpful.

Happy to hear that Niklon. That's what it's all about, helping one another.
I should explain, I was too intent on keeping it short, and I neglected to show how to 'clean up' the beard, etc. Using either/or the 'sponge tool' and the 'burn' tool could have done a fair job of doing that. (Sorry 'bout that).

Thanks. I'd never come across this tool before this before, but I'm pretty sure that now that I'm aware of it, it will come in handy every now and then.

My pleasure Koracat. It's one of those tools we rarely use, but handy when the need arises.

My pleasure, happy to help. Yes, it's sort of one of those 'ignored' tools, but handy when needed.

Hi Tradio,
Happy to share what I can. I've belonged to a computer club for years and our motto was "Pass It On''. Thanks to others who have observed that motto, I was able to glean a bit of 'how to' from them, so why not pass it on?

My pleasure Chuck. It's not something we'd use very often but nice when needed.
