Looking for suggestions as to what went wrong with my attempts to photo the comet last night. It was the first time I tried night sky photos with this camera. I set it up in Manual for minimum fstop and 20 s exposures at ISO 1000. The few that worked suggest that was about right...with some star trailing as expected.

The problem of concern was that it would go into the exposure and even click after the 20 s, but there was not an additional image.

The other issues were focus and alignment as nothing was visible through the viewfinder. I used manual focus too. But I’ll deal with those later.

Not my area of interest, I'm afraid - however, there's a Norwegian landscape photographer who has recently made 2 videos about his first attempts to photograph the comet and which may help you. Note the number of subscribers he has and the number of views of his two videos ....... and the amount of effort he puts into getting his shots !

lately I have been wondering why i have spent $5k on my Canon 5 mk4 and the L lenses. My son gets "acceptable" photos with his %$# cell phone...!!! maybe only the pros need the top of the line cameras...
I coulda bought a lot of beer with that $5,000!

Yeah - guess that's all I'm saying really - everyone has a choice, but some, including me in the past, have purchased a lot more gear than is really needed or even used on a consistent basis.

Hope you can still get a few beers down you - we could all do with that right now - cheers !

I went from a Nikon D810 to a Fujifilm X-T20 for my studio focus stacking macro/micro work and other than the difference in file size I can not tell which camera was used on which image. Perhaps if I were to print large poster size work the difference would be more noticeable however I don't print anything.

Your choices, sippyjug ...... and I doubt if I, or any outsiders, could tell whether my pics come from a D700 or a Fuji X-T2 !

Guess what I'm saying, in a round about way, is ...... my experiences (as enthusiast) have taught me, via my pocket (!!) to only buy and use what's "good enough" to satisfy me. I have the feelin' that there are many here who might fall into the same boat !

And you used to have a D700. I also have a FF camera. If need were to force my hand and I had to chose to have only one camera I would chose the camera I use the most and that would be my G7 compact.

Joe

Hey Joe - we're not having a transatlantic quarrel here ! Yep, I used to have a D700. Nice camera that served me well, but it was my choice to give it up, 'cos I found I was getting what I want from APS-C and found two systems a "bit of a nuisance", and unnecessary. My choice ! Happy for you that if it came down to one you'd choose your G7 - again, your choice, but not what I'm asking ...... I've deliberately got one camera and 3 lenses ....... "good enough", snap ja dat?

I have Fuji X Series cameras. But most of the time I just grab my little Canon G7 compact because it fits in my pocket. I was out for a walk the other night at twilight and saw some Ailanthus seeds hanging on a branch and grabbed a snap. Had to turn the ISO up to 1250.

Why do folks need to spend the money on APS-C?

Joe

Why do folks need to spend the money on APS-C, Joe?

I'm a Brit - could be called "enthusiast" but no more - used to be Nikon with D700 and nice f1.8 lenses - found Fuji in 2013 - ran both systems side-by-side until I asked myself "what's good enough for me?"

Went with Fuji - this is X-T2 (there's now a T4) and the "slow" 35mm f1.4 - simple table light is the only light source - this is me (aaarrgh !) f2 / 1/50sec / ISO 200.

Why do folks need to spend the money on full-frame ?

I can use use autofocus on this lens on my DSLR, D850, but can get it to work on my Z6 with the FTZ adaptor. Manual focus works fine on both cameras.

The lens is a 70-180 D Macro lens

Any of you Hoggers have any ideas what mistake I am making ?

Hey Hammer, my fellow Brit ...... are you smiling as much as me at the contributions to your post? Cor blimey - they DO "go on a bit" don't they?

I've read some of your posts and see that you now appear quite happy with your Z6, but somehow along your overall "Nikon journey", you amassed a lens that is a little different..... one needing a screw drive in the camera to make autofocus work.

Right from the outset Nikon made it clear that Z-series cameras did not have this screw drive. Thom Hogan said in Sept 2018 "G and D type lenses with screwdrive autofocus: do not autofocus, otherwise fully compatible." At that time you were well into your D800 and D850. Mirrorless? Not even on your horizon. Not necessarily your fault that you "missed" that snippet when researching your Z6.

But it's not the end of the world (as often members here seem to make out) - use the lens with your DSLRs if you plan on keeping them.

You, and other UHH members "thinking but not sure about mirrorless", will be amazed how many have already "done it" and taken the totally mirrorless route ...... and for some years, and quite happily.

You've been in business, are well travelled, are still enjoying your photo journey, seem to be able to afford it - am in same boat. Just how many cameras and lenses do you need at this stage to accomplish what you want? Think about it !

Thanks for the response/suggestion, and I agree. So far, I have used only Fuji lenses on my X-T2, but I do have a couple of smaller primes in EF Mount, especially an EF 50mm f2.5 Macro that MIGHT be worth trying on the Fuji unless of course, the adapter is similar in price to a native Fuji prime like the 80mm Macro. Looking at the offerings, I keep seeing no electrical contacts on the EOS side which makes me wonder about focus and aperture control, and often, the specs are not very specific.

Hi Trix - bedtime here and we're reeling from the revelations that our PM agrees more so with his "aide" than with "the people who voted for him".

That adapter will cost you $299.

Here I go .... ! Why complicate things? Why not just put the cash towards any native Fuji lens you might be considering? Why not just sell all your non-Fuji glass - if you want to go Fuji, as I did after ff Nikon - take the hit if necessary, and then buy the best glass you can for your camera of choice.

Problems I perceive for many here are that they have too much gear - problems made worse by the fact they have more than one camera system. Been there, done that - am not a pro, or made of money, so just have one nice camera (X-T2) and 3 XF lenses that are just fine for me right now. Funny how adopting a "what's good enough for me" philosophy helps in all this.

But you, as with all the UHH community, are you ....

Looking for user experiences and/or recommendations for a Canon EOS to Fuji X mount adapter that preserves AF and aperture Control.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

You may be thinking of this.

Leave it to you to research its viability (against cost) for you for Fuji X cameras.

No personal experience ....... I tend to fall into the Burke photo camp of "native lenses for mirrorless cameras".

I've used the RH2 for over six years with my D800e & D850 and two heavy lenses - it's strong enough to hold any camera / lens combo. I've seen many gimbals and have tried many to compare and the only gimbal that's as good and possibly better is the $600 Wimberly.

There ya' go ! I knew I'd seen US members buying, and happy with, the Lensmaster. I'm sure there are more.

I sold mine to a UK birder who's now in Spain and uses it on a Sony A7iii and their 200-600 FE lens.

Simply saying that you don't have to pay the highest prices if you know, or can be guided, where else to look for equal, sometimes greater, value. The world is much smaller thanks to the internet.

My daughter is a young filmmaker who has won awards for her screenplays and has begun making short films. Camera rentals can become expensive and she noticed I had a Nikon D800e in my hands and wants to borrow it to make films. I have read that a Nikon D700 shoots video but just how good is this camera for film making. I assume the D800 might be better but prefer to start her with the D700, which is a legendary workhorse.

Any thoughts.

Many thanks.

Frank Shaun

Hi Frank, and many congrats to your daughter for her achievements with film so far.

May I, perhaps, ask you and your daughter to "slow down" a little and indulge in research which will undoubtedly result in more favourable equipment acquisition.

There's a member here (Burke photo) who I would recommend you approach for a chat and assistance.

Being outside the USA I'd like to give you both some YouTubers to take a look at who all maintain excellent and well-supported channels that might act as good research material.

Predictable set of responses, given that this tends to be a US based website.

There are folks in other countries who don't necessarily, thank goodness, think that what comes from the USA is "best on the market".

Yes, if "made in USA" really is best ..... but knowledge, know how, experience, and the ability to simply be prepared to search outside my own country to find "best overall value" tells me otherwise !

Can anyone recommend one of these that will be robust enough to handle a D850 plus Sigma 150-600mm, fit a Manfrotto tripod and not break the bank?

This guy makes his own, has been doing it successfully for years in his own garage (I've been there, met him, even purchased from him) and he's quite content to "post abroad".

And there have even been UHH US customers who have bought and been happy with something "made in England" ......chuckle, chuckle !!

No need to lash out lots of cash buying from "the big boys" that many US UHH folk will recommend.

I presume you just skipped over the XT-3 and went directly to the XT-4. What lens did you get? My XT-2 came with the standard 18-55. I really think you need an external charger. My XT-2 did come with one.

The time between the launch of the T3 and T4 was shorter than has been normal - as a result T3 owners may be more reluctant to upgrade. We're seeing a lot of that in Europe. Of course we still have the "gotta have the latest" crowd here too !
