Not the prettiest or most graceful critter but kinda cool in its own way.On Fripp Island, SC. I think that I broke some basic composition rules here but I don't care.

Sad news...went back this morning to attempt getting more images of the Great Horned fledgling. The fellow that has been keeping track of it was there. He had a handful of bloodied white feathers. Said that he heard a hawk in the area at sunset last evening. I sent him the above image. Thank you to all who looked and commented.

While photographing on Fripp Island SC yesterday, a lady approached and told us that she had spotted a baby owl in a Live Oak tree. She explained where it was and we began searching. An hour later my wife spotted this little fur ball. The light was horrible so we decided to return early this morning. A fledgling Great Horned Owl. While watching and photographing, a local approached and said that he has been watching the nest and the parents since Thanksgiving. This little one showed up in early January and is now "branching", venturing away from the nest with short flights. It should be fully flight certified by mid-March. Quite a find...even more meaningful since the little one allowed me to capture its image.

Ring-Billed Gull with a yummy Marine Worm. Yep, Marine Worm, I googled my butt off and that is the best that I can do. Perhaps there is an Oligochaeteologist in the group that can provide a better ID.
Fripp Island SC continues to provide limitless opportunities to photograph birds.

As to the politicians, hide under a rock! Wait, that's where they live, Run while you can!

There are no rocks here in Low Country..only sand, lots of sand. The politicians and their entourages are currently hogging up all of the rooms at the Holiday Inn Express. Maybe some of that sand in their beds....thank you looking at and commenting on my birds.

your beak."

The birds and weather here on Fripp Island SC continue to provide hours of image capturing opportunities. The Great Egret, on the left, was looking west, the Wood Stork looking east. I, luckily, was looking north. And none of us was looking at the coma inducing non stop political commercials currently hogging the airways here in South Carolina. Thank God for the birds. O yeah...I have the smallest beak.

It must be working...a re-visit to the nest site this revealed some activity.

...and this male Great Blue Heron on Fripp Island SC has started the mating process by constructing a small "marketing" nest just before Valentines Day. His goal is to attract a female who approves of him and the location he has chosen. The lucky gal will take over construction, growing the final nest to almost 4 feet in diameter. He will provide building material, an occasional frog and moral support. Egg laying (4 to 6) usually occurs in early April. My hope is that he is successful.

Friday evening (Feb 5th) was dark and clear on Fripp Island SC. My brother used his 10" Meade Reflector to capture M42, the Great Orion Nebula. I used the Nikon D700 and Rokinon 24mm f1.4 to image the Orion Constellation then added the graphics to indicate the location of the Nebula. We are having fun learning. This is becoming an addictive activity.

On the ocean side of Fripp Island near Beaufort SC. There are a bunch of them. When on a feeding frenzy (which seems to be constantly) they make great targets for BIF photography practice.
