"or is there yet another camera that does the thinking for you"

This question suggests to me that another class or two might be the best use of your time and money right now. I wouldn't recommend a DSLR until you decide you want to do the thinking for yourself, and if that time never comes, it (the DSLR) would just be an expensive frustration.

Another vote for the original-- in the enhancement you have lost the delicate character of the grasses and the natural look of the weathered wood.

Though I wasn't the one asking, thanks for a very clear and helpful explanation. Who would have thought it would take a rocket scientist?... but my high school physics is so long ago that our teacher told us of his experiences in WW1!

I have no relationship to the military, and your title meant absolutely nothing to me. Neither does your photo-- and I'd say in this case you have not succeeded in fulfilling your artist's statement: "I have done my part as an artist/photographer if my work does create something for you." It lacks a focal point. As a famous war photographer said, "If your photos aren't good enough, you're not close enough". Getting a lot closer might give you a much more interesting viewpoint, and a chance at a good photo.

Here's one of my favorites for your mom-- a northern specialty: lupine. With a friend visiting...

I think what you need to do is click on the "Pictures" heading-- I just did that, and saw "Alaskan views" as the third topic. And they are lovely, by the way. I wondered the same thing for quite a while, then found that each day more entries get added but don't show up on the "front page", so you have to click the heading to find them.

Love the wild-looking pose-- a little like its cousins, the bobcat and lynx.

Very interesting effect and makes your photo really pop! Did you mean to leave the lower left corner of the white frame incomplete? I am thinking that completing the white frame would make the photo a little better.

I like it as it is, and might even feather it a little (if you can do that) up from the emerging turtle head, and maybe up a mm. or two from the corner. To me, it looks as if they're breaking free of the frame to join the others-- interesting how our artistic tastes vary.

wow ..nice shot[/quote]

Thanks to you and Stumptowner-- it definitely was cold! A February storm on Lake Superior made for some dramatic shots, and freezing my fingers was worth it.

A modest try to compensate for the basic issues.

I'm afraid that looks to me as if you've pasted (photoshopped) him in now.

Ok the problem for me is they built the ground and floors too far down. Getting old SUCKS !

Just remember, the alternative isn't all that appealing at the moment...
