This should infuriate everyone in this country, conservative or liberal. If this can happen with one group, it will be used with others if it becomes an advantage to the powers that be.

Just because it is aimed at the conservative Tea Party at the present time doesn't mean that it will not be used against a liberal organization in the future. How can we as Americans even think of dismissing this if there is just a thread of truth to it?

The 70D that I got for Christmas, about 500 shots ago has spots on the sensor. Have used the auto clean and clean now features, as well as manual only to blow the sensor with an air bulb. These spots don't really look like dust, as they appear on the image as little out of focus blobs about 1/3 the size of a pencil eraser. Kind of a water spot looking thing. Canon said send the camera back which I plan to do. Just wondering if anyone else has had this experience with such limited use. Could this be the dreaded Nikon 600 issue?

Thanks,

Bill

However much it costs, it has to be less than the $1,400 for a new body.

Who would pay 1,400 for a D7100 body? Amazon, B&H, etc. have them for 1,096. Still, a repair would be cheaper.

The lens I have on 90% of the time is Canon 18-135 IS STM, so I guess that is what I would have if I could only have one.

I have a 70D and have used the D7100 quite a bit. There is not much difference between the two image wise that I can see. The 70D has better video, and seems to shoot more shots in rapid mode before hitting buffer.

I like the articulating screen on the 70D, and it is really handy for video.

Marah,, there is a wealth of information on YouTube as well as Adorama TV http://www.adorama.com/alc/ and a bunch of other places. One of my favorites is Digital Photography School. Start by learning composition. Set your camera on P or Av or even AUTO.

I disagree with this. Learn exposure and light, then worry about composition. It doesn't matter how good the composition is if exposure and light suck.

Shoot in manual, learn what the different changes do to the image, ie. depth of field, over/under exposure, etc.

If you just shoot in auto, you will never learn about exposure or all that a camera like the 70D is capable of. You will also not learn how to make your own decisions if you let the camera make them for you.

I just finished a college DSLR photo class and one of the requirements was that all shots be in manual, and no flash was allowed. It was all about learning the camera and light.

My daughter has a 5200 and my sister has a 5000. Can't tell a lot of difference except the rear screen is better on the 5200. Image quality in the real world seems about the same and they function about the same. I don't think you would gain much by going from a 5100 to a 5200.

My sister did just upgrade to a 7100 and now there is a difference. Camera is easier to use, all standard shooting functions, AF, ISO, exposure, can all be set and controlled without going into the menu. Camera is more intuitive to use and adjustments are faster.

If you don't mind a little extra weight and can swing the price, the 7100 is definitely the way to go.

It's a way to underexpose and overexpose a shot, giving you a chance to pick the best exposure. for a 7 bracketed shot, each shot would be a increment change for each exposure override;
Pic 1 = -1.0
Pic 2 = -0.7
Pic 3 = -0.3
Pic 4 = 0.0
Pic 5 = +0.3
Pic 6 = +0.7
Pic 7 = +1.0

You have the option to pic one of the 7 that turned out best.

I know what the function is for, I was using a quote from Selkii that implied that Canon only had a three frame bracket. When I said I didn't know what that meant, I was referring to his statement that Canon only had 3 when in fact my 70D has 7.

I recently read that using exposure compensation is a way around the 3-shot, bracketing max of some cameras - like the Canon

Don't know what this means. My Canon 70D has 7 shot bracketing.

On strongly back lit subjects I use it to over expose, blow out the background and keep the main subject properly exposed. Good for making snowy scenes white. Without over exposure the snow will be recorded as grey.

On very dark backgrounds you can underexpose to insure that you get the proper exposure on the main subject.

The camera light meter is reading 18% grey so if there is a lot of light around the subject, the camera will try to make it 18% grey. That is going to under expose your subject. Same except in reverse with dark backgrounds. The meter will go for 18% grey and you image will be overexposed.

Saw where the Prime Minister of South Korea resigned over the sinking of the ferry. I can't see how that was even his fault.

Don't you wish our leaders had that kind of integrity. We could be rid of Obama, Harry Reid, Nancy, Beohnor (sp.)and his cronies, most of the IRS, and the DHS.

Thank you for the suggestions bill regarding getting a battery and an sd card, who has it the least expensive?

The kit you are getting will include a spare battery and one SD card.

That is the same package I got for Christmas and the same price. It is the same price at Sam's Club. Looking at an add in a photo mag for B&H, and the price of a 70D body only is 1199. 1349 with a 18-55 mm STM lens, so I would say it is about as good a deal as you are going to get without having to go used, refurburished, or grey market.

I think the lenses are 18-55 and 55-250, not the 18-250 you mentioned. You should also get a spare battery, and one SD card, as well as the case.

Definitely the 70D over the 5300. More features, easier to use, and all exposure and AF controls are available without going to the menu. Between the 70D and the D7100, take your pick. They both do the same thing. The 70D has better video, and it will write to the card faster than the D7100. In continuous shooting mode the D7100 hits buffer and slows down with less shots than the 70D.

With STM lenses and the 70D the focus is completely silent, and extremely fast.
