Thanks. Sorry to hear about the 18-400. Do you think the Sony would be sharper in good light?

The only connection between sharpness and 'good light' is that 'good light' reduces noise, and noise is a natural enemy of sharpness.

One of the things Maine is famous for is their 'two-foot' railroads. In Wiscasset, just north of Portland, they are restoring one of them, including a locomotive and several cars originally used on that line. Proportions are completely different from what we are used to.

When I was referring to the grip I meant the camera's grip not a battery grip. If you rotate the camera clockwise to take a picture what finger do you use to trip the shutter and if you are using back-button focus what finger do you use for that?

I've held the camera the same way for over thirty years. I don't use BBF.

Holding camera with short lens vertically. I use left hand to hold lens when lens is long.

Mirrorless camera's are NOT that much lighter. Not when it comes to camera and lenses, especially mirrorless zoom lenses. The non 2.8 zoom lenses I am talking about. Not much difference at all, not when it comes down to direct comparisons. Mirrorless is the NEW, DSLR'S are the old, NEW has a natural appeal as better, therefore it builds it's own appeal.

This thread is about weight. MILC is different discussion - in fact, there are several going on right now. If I were to get an MILC, and given what Pentax has said recently, that isn't likely, it would be for a completely different reason - namely benefits resulting from use of an EVF, but that is completely irrelevant to this discussion.

Yes there will remain some DSLR especially if you DLSR folks keep yours. Just remember camera makers only support and repair cameras for a number of years, and factory support is not for as many years as it used to be. I have pro friends with Nikon D3 and D4s that Nikon will no longer support for repair. Nikon wants them to upgrade to D5s. And Nikon has pulled out of supplying parts to independent camera repair shops, severely hurting their business. Now only a few factory repair facilities remain for Nikon repairs.

Will Nikon and Canon's own full-frame systems mean less factory support for their aging DSLRs, probably.

Why do you keep treating me like an opponent? I said that I've been expecting MILC to succeed for some time now - expecting both to remain should be OK.

If you want to take pictures, use a smart phone. If you want to make pictures, use a camera.

False separation. I use DSLR to "take" pictures of speeding trains that smart phone couldn't handle. I know a guy who started with a smart phone picture of friends standing in front of church and "made" a picture of them standing on a beach.

Yes you get the OP's question. This is a discussion really if we thing DSLRs wont be king in the future. This came from interviews of the execs of the Japanese camera makers themselves, and they all agree DLSRs won't dominate in the future. These are the folks that make them and this is what they are publicly saying. That should tell you what their product development plans are, and it is to go full-in for mirrorless or be left behind.

Not quite all. Pentax seems to have no MILC intentions right now ... of course, their identity is tied to the pentaprism. For several years now I've been expecting things to flip. When MILC becomes dominant, DSLR will remain, but less important, and the two could co-exist for a number of years.

Clockwise is not easier or quicker. Counter clockwise is the correct way. Always keep your right hand on the camera's grip and your right index finger on the shutter release and always keep your left hand palm up supporting the lens. (You can easily zoom with your left thumb and third finger.) You can switch from landscape to portrait in an instant just bringing your right elbow up.

What is "right" about having your right elbow 'up', hanging in the air?? Rotate clockwise and your elbows are tucked into your body as normal because your left hand is on the lens / left side and your right hand is on the right side as normal. And there is nothing special about keeping your hand firmly on the grip; back in the day, we did just fine with no or little grip; modern grips are part of the trend to unnecessarily large cameras

That's what happens to me with the D7100 which prompted my question. At F16 plus the preview is a dark or black view that shows nothing. What is this telling me? At f3.5 the view dims very little, if any. I wasn't sure if the button if working properly or I just don't get it the purpose of it.
Normally you are looking through the lens wide open.

When you have the lens set at f/3.5, pressing the button closes down from wide open to f/3.5, so it dims a little.

When you have the lens set at f/16, pressing the button closes down from wide open to f/16, so it dims a lot.

Because of their small sensor size, bridge cameras are notoriously "bad" about blurring backgrounds except at the telephoto end of the lens.

edit: just found an article that mentions some new bridge cameras with 1" sensors. Check it out:
https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/buying-guides/the-best-bridge-cameras

To compare, your current camera's sensor is 7.144 x 5.358 mm, while the Sony rx10 iii is 13.2mm x 8.8mm. But also, especially if cost is an issue, you can often get around the depth of field issue by using the longer focal lengths. What type of photography/subjects does your wife shoot? The standard-sized sensor bridge camera with longer zoom than your current camera may be worth considering.

Here's a topic I did a few years ago regarding the Canon SX50 and depth of field for those who aren't familiar with a bridge camera's properties in this area:

Linda is right. Unless you are working at long focal lengths, it is hard to get much "out of focus" with a small sensor .... and the lenses of bridge cameras are not particularly designed to produce pleasing bokeh.

At least you're honest - but even at this stage the top of each page shows that you' have to read only 4 pages worth.

My wife and I had a very informal wedding, and neither of us had any desire for the nice artsy stuff professionals produce ... then some friends of ours - fellow poor grad students - offered to take snapshots in lieu of {costly} gifts, so that is what we did. We're approaching our 39th anniversary, and we've never regretted that decision.

But once you've hired a pro, the whole narrative is different. S/he needs to work unhindered - and from the most recent wedding I attended, an army of smart phone toting guests will make that hard enough. If you're just taking candid's, any camera {preferably small} will do - the "FF only" rule will be irrelevant - so take a small one if you wish, but do try to enjoy yourself!!
