I'm not really picking on you Erik, but this is often the problem with the weekly contests.

Not only this week, but frequently the contest has submissions from members who don't have a clue what the subject is about. I expected this would be a problem when I saw the subject for the week and I have not been disappointed. Fully half (or more) of the submissions are not "on subject" and should be deleted. "Vertorama" does not mean vertical (portrait) orientation, it does not mean just any time you have your camera pointed up in the air, it does not mean just anything that's up in the air (such as an airplane or a bird sitting on a post).

I'm glad this subject was posted, riverlass, 'cause I've been holding off on ranting about this for a couple of days. And it could have all been avoided if the posters would spend two minutes looking at the links provided be St3v3, to figure out what the subject is about.

And I know it doesn't address your concern about the "‘who, what, where, why, when or how’ they went through to get it", but I think this is a more serious ongoing problem with posters who just don't "get it".
I'm not really picking on you Erik, but this is of... (show quote)

In the USA, you have the right to photograph anyone, or anything, that is in a public place, and need no permission. That is what makes News photography / videography possible. Other nations have different laws, and there is nothing you can do about it. Know the law, in the location you are in, before you press that shutter release.

Theoretically, you're correct, rbfanman. However the website mentioned reports on many instances in the USA where photographers are being prevented from, and in some cases arrested for exercising that right.

Since the right to take photographs/video in public occasionally becomes a much discussed topic on UHH, I just learned of a website some of you may be interested in.

Take the title of this topic, remove the spaces and add .com to get there.

BTW, remember the 70 year old fellow arrested and currently detained in the UAE for illegal photography? According to the UK's Daily Mail, he was arrested for taking a photo of a sign that read "NO PHOTOGRAPHY". The story says the man thought it was amusing.

I bet he's not laughing now.

Warning - Photography Is Not A Crime is an edgy website. As they used to say in Rome - Caveat Lector.

Some times they print my name and other times they forget. It's the times they forget that bother me. And no I haven't asked them if they will go with my own ID mark. I guess you could call me a Free Lance Photographer. We don't have a contract of any sorts, small town newspaper.

Harley, the newspaper is a business. No matter how little they are paying you for your photos, you're not an amateur or hobby photographer any more.

It would be prudent for you and the paper to sit down and draw up an agreement specifying who owns the rights to your work product.

[quote=Harley De Vaux III]Need some help! I am the owner of a Canon EOS Rebel T5i. For the last year and a half I have been working for a small town newspaper as a Photographer, learning as I go. I would like to have my full name, in small print on each one of my photographs. quote]

Harley, when you say "my photographs", are you referring to just your personal shots, or including those shot for the newspaper?

I'm not an expert on this, but the newspaper may have the copyright on shots you take when working for them. Was that negotiated with the paper when you began shooting for them?

Was not sure where to post, so am here. Friend travelling in Arab Emirates arrested for taking pictures of "restricted buildings." Anyone having history with this - mostly looking for good news :-) "We" are staying positive as friend obviously meant no harm, BUT apparently he did break their law. Do not know how serious this is, no charges or trial set after about 2 weeks. Info appreciated. His network of friends are actively reaching out...

Does that network of friends include anyone in the US embassy or consular office? Logically, they are the first choice when a US citizen finds themselves in legal trouble in a foreign nation.

Welcome, you live in a great place this time of year for flowers. I like these images, but they really belong in the Photo Gallery, this section is more for discussion. Also, if you want criticism or help with your pictures, the Photo Critique section is where you want to post them.

Beware, hoggers! If you get an email with an attachment claiming to be an invoice from Adobe and you're sure you shouldn't be getting billed for something....DON'T OPEN IT.

Within the last couple of weeks I have been researching online about Adobe's Creative Cloud offer, ie. PS and LR. Haven't signed up for it yet.

About 10 days ago I received an email from billing@adobe.com that said my invoice was included as a zip file attachment. Since I hadn't bought anything from Adobe, I thought this was strange.

I deleted the email, I received another one a few days later, and deleted it as well.

This morning, I got the same email. After hunting down Adobe's support number, I called them. Waiting times were under 10 minutes, so I used their call back system, and a customer service rep was back to me in a few minutes.

I explained what was happening, and she said that was not an email from Adobe, and requested I forward it to this email:

phishing@adobe.com

It's sad we have to remain hyper-vigilant about these things, but it's a price we pay for the technology we enjoy.

Adobe customer support - 800 833 6687 in case you want to speak to a rep.

I suggest one that takes to the water better.

OK, enough smart aleck. Sorry for your misfortune.

This might be an opportunity to move to Full Frame.

BTW, how's the lens doing?

A well known, non-profit consumer reporting group indicates that September & October are good months to find deals on digital cameras (which is a BIG category). They also report that March & April are good months as well.

They do admit that there are always exceptions, so one should carefully watch apps, ads and emails for offers "out of season".

And don't be afraid of politely haggling for a better deal. The worst that can happen is that they say "No". You're left to pay their asking price, or walk out the door.

Caveat Emptor!
