In addition to setting your BBF you must also de-activate the focus function from the shutter release, otherwise yes the camera will re-focus after recomposing your image and pressing the shutter half way down.

I suspected I might. Will look through the manual to find that little setting

Thanks

Hi

Using my D7200 for amature team sports with lots of fast action. After learning about it here, I changed the AF-L button function to be BBF when pressed and locked when released. Learning how to use it, but I like this as the scene is always changing and this is definetly easier that than pressing half way on the shutter release. Focus is now set to AF-C/D9 matrix

My question, for those of you whom use BBF, especially for sports, is that occasionally I want to compose a scene (e.g. A corner kick) where I can set the focus on the ball in advance, and then release the BBF button to "lock it". This allows me to recompose the framing of the scene. My question is that when I have done this, and then a press the shutter release all the way down, will going through the half way point reactivate focus and then change to focus on whatever is in the center of the viewfinder. It seems to be doing this and throwing pics slightly out of focus. Also happens occasionally when I shoot through the hole between two players battling for the ball.

Anyone have any experience with this? If so, is there a way (and should I) turn off the focus on the half shutter release?

Thanks in advance to you all, and not just for this. I feel reading this every day is gaining me knowledge very quickly. For giggles, attaching a few pics shot this weekend. Not submitting for critique (at least not yet), but as examples of what I have learned in less than 60 days from you all. Lots more to go. So I think pics 1 and 3 might be showing the focus issue as these are not "tack sharp" to my eye. (Or if just flubbed it - always a possibility. These are cropped, but in the original shots the focus point in the exact center was between players

Thanks. (FYI - these are just cropped jpegs. Local lightroom class starting after first of year)

Interesting, and very explainable (I think)

Just like the other adjustments we can make to control the amount of light falling on the sensor, each 'stop" wants to halve or double the amount of light from the adjacent. In this case, you are adusting a circle, and the relevant measure is area, which increases by the square of the radius.

Had never thought about the computation of the actual numbers and rounding, but just as you half or double shutter speed or ISO, we want the light to double or halve as well.

I am not sure why I am wasting my time replying, but to express my aggravation at having clicked on a title that worthless (and that's my kind language!)

Oh, and if you are using back button focus, it works perfectly.

When you half press the shutter button, it displays remaining card capacity, but if you are using the BBF technique, it keep displaying ISO until you fully press the shutter.

And the winner is....

the EASY ISO setting (d8) in combination with autoISO via the ISO button on the back on the D7200. I set it here, and it flashes the autoISO but also now displays the ISO value to the right. Was not sure this would work in M, but it does, and the manual does not appear to talk about this.

-In A priority, command wheel (back) changes ISO and sub command changes sub command (front) changes ISO. AutoISO functioning working until you override or until reach max allowable (set via menu) and then shutter speed starts to float. Per manual and as expected

-in S priority, "same function" as above but ISO override/control now on back wheel and S control on front. A will not float until you reach the lowest setting you put in via the ISO button on the back. Ditto on expectations/manual.

-in M mode, Shutter control on the back wheel, A control on the front, and autoISO fully engaged between the two limits (low and high) that you set.

This is just what I wanted, but it is not (that I could find) documented anywhere (the combination of AutoISO, easyISO, and M mode.

Brenda. Your links provided the clue. Thanks

Now, if I can just figure out how to save all the stuff I have changed.......

Hi

Steve P gets the nugget for best describing what I want, but, alas, this seems to be a very subtle difference between the D7100 and D7200. From the links I have been able to follow (Thanks Brenda), Earl is exactly right on the D7100, but not apparently the same on the D7200. There does not appear to be a ISO display open in the d-menu of custom settings.

The remaining frame count (either as, for example, 13 , short for 1300, without the shutter button pressed or r1.3k with the shutter half pressed) seems like the only choices. If I push the ISO button on the camera, it will display the currently selected ISO, but that really defeats the point, doesn't it?

There seem to be a couple of threads suggesting turning on easy ISO, but I will have to try this to what the effect will be when in M mode when the front and rear command modes are occupied by Shutter and Aperture, (and I want them to stay that way!)

Wish me luck, and suggestions are always welcome.

Hi Brenda.

Yes, I see that in that it goes to "rXX" when I half press. I thought that might be remaining shots, but the number seems very low compared to my cards (Should I only get 50 RAW shots on a 64gb card on this camera? - seems low.

The number in that section of the display does not to me appear to be ISO, but I will take earl's suggestion and give it a try. It might be one of the subtle differences between a 7100 and 7200

It looks like you were going to post a link above, but I don't think it came through.

Thanks

Hi UHHs

Still very new D7200 owner and I am playing with settings. Currently experimenting with Manual settings but going auto ISO (similar to John G's post earlier).

So far, for what I am doing, the results are decent and I like having control of Shutter (to set the motion freeze that I need) as well as Aperture (for controlling overall light and DoF) while letting ISO float a bit to compensate for changing light conditions (currently field sports)

My question is very specific and very technical, but I have not found the answer in the (LONG) manual nor online. When I look at the data displayed while shooting, I get the shutter speed, Aperture and exposure. It displays that I am in auto-ISO, but is there a way to change the display to show what ISO it is choosing for that particular situation? I know it does so on the LCD on the top but I would like to see it through the lens if possible. Have yet to find a menu item to change this (likely on the right side I would think) to display this instead of some of the other info it currently has up?

Thanks in advance, and I am learning a lot every day from you all.

Cheers

As a beginner, nice to get some logic behind a starting point. I can experiment as I learn from there

PM me if you have one in good condition you looking to part with (maybe to buy the next great lens for your kit!). Thanks

By only comment is to remember that in using an FX lens on a crop body, you need to remember the crop factor for the "equivalent' length of the lens, especially if you are comparing between FX and DX bodies.

So that's what all that gobblygook means.....

Really helpful, especially the part about ensuring you get the right bus speed for your camera
