I recognize that there are faster ways to get photo files to a computer. But I’ll give you all two big reasons why I think this functionality is important for me.

First, when I was a more active reporter and shot my photos with the story, I could move the files to my smartphone and then get them to an editor or post directly to a blog or social media. (Yes, I am still not enamored with social media for news, but it’s the way of the world now and you must keep up.) I also do it for personal stuff occasionally.

Second, we don’t always want to drag our laptop with us, especially on flights and/or international trips. The Wi-Fi gets the files to the phone from which I can either upload to my Dropbox and/or move them to a thumb drive through a GoTo cable.

I think one of the beauties of technology is we have these options.

By the way, before EyeFi started to regroup from its egregiously stupid move on the older cards, I got a Toshiba FlashAir. So far, it works well in some backyard trial runs.

I just found this in my mailbox tonight:

To the users of Eye-Fi X2 and Earlier Generation Eye-Fi cards:
Last month we announced the “End of Life” (EOL) of a range of products including Eye-Fi Pro X2 and prior products. For details on that announcement please click HERE. There is new information contained in this announcement.
Note: Eyefi Mobi and Mobi Pro customers are not impacted by this EOL process.
NEW X2 UTILITY
This notice is to inform you that Eyefi has started work on a new desktop software utility – the X2 Utility (X2U) for the PC and Mac – that will permit cards impacted by the EOL continue operating beyond the deadline of September 15, 2016.
As a reminder, after September 15, 2016 Eye-Fi Center desktop software will no longer have the ability to configure Eye-Fi X2 and other cards impacted by the EOL. Customers wishing to use the X2U will have to uninstall Eye-Fi Center from their computer prior to installing the new utility. Once the X2U is installed and activated, cards impacted by the EOL will have ability to continue transferring images to a desktop computer.
The X2U will be provided to users free of charge as-is and without warranty or helpdesk support. We will publish knowledge base documentation on how to set-up and use the X2U.
X2 Utility Highlights
• Support for Pro X2 and all earlier generation products with the “Eye-Fi” branding as well as 3rd party branded cards from SanDisk and Visioneer
• Activation and set-up of cards to transfer images to a PC or Mac via an infrastructure or direct network connection
• Transferred images will be saved to a directory of users choosing but will be organized in a date based chronological order
• Eye-Fi Center software must be un-installed from the PC or Mac prior to installation of the X2U
• X2U will NOT integrate with Eye-Fi View nor Eyefi Cloud service: it will be limited to desktop transfer only
Today we are releasing the X2U on the Mac (OS X) platform. We will provide an updated notice if and when the X2U becomes available on Windows, and cannot guarantee such availability before the end of August and prior to the shutdown of Eye-Fi Center and Eye-Fi View.
Finally, this utility is being provided to allow more time for customers seeking an alternative WiFi SD card solution. It is not intended as a permanent/long-term solution. The X2U will not be adding any new features beyond this one-time release set of capabilities.
In order to download the Mac version of the X2U as well as accessing further information on the utility, please click HERE. If and when the Windows version is available, it can be accessed at the same location.
Regards,
The Eyefi Team

Iv'e gone through the same agony. I've also had good luck with the Empire chargers. But the lesson I learned is to stay with the OEM battery. I am particularly disappointed in the Vivitar batteries, which don't last as long as OEM. We just replaced a battery for our G15 and stayed with Canon this time. I have not tried another brand for my Nikon.

Why are you so negative on the Plustek??? Every other "review" I've seen says it provides much much much more quality than the Wolverine does

I am negative because I bought one and used it for about 10 days. It was slow, clumsy and the software was awkward. That was about three years ago. Maybe the product has been improved. I found the Wolverine to be easier, the software more user friendly and the results quite pleasing.

I can't speak to why others gave it a favorable review.

While jobbing out the scanning saves time, the costs (as I investigated some time ago) can be high. I tried the Plustek scanner. It was horrible and so was its software. I returned it to B&H and in B&H typical fashion, quickly gave me an RMA and a full refund without a glitch or hassle.

I ended up getting a Wolverine F2D Mighty 20MP 7-in-1 Film to Digital Converter. It works great for slides and negatives and I can personally attest it is easy to use and has given me great results. It can write scans to an SD card. It will feed images to a TV screen but I never tried it.

I just got back from a vacation and learned that Eye-fi is no more. Here is the email I got July 1:

June 30, 2016

To Our Eye-Fi X2 and Earlier Generation Product Customers:

This message is for customers that purchased an Eye-Fi Pro X2 or earlier generation products prior to March 2015. Effective today, June 30th 2016, we will no longer be offering support for our legacy product lines, a complete list of which appears below. This notice formally begins the final stage of the “end-of-life” (EOL) process started in mid-2015 for the affected products. It’s very important that customers cease using these products no later than September 16, 2016 as some key services these products rely on will be shut down at that time. All customers who have a Mobi or Mobi Pro products purchased since 2013 are not affected by this announcement.

We began EOL on these product lines in 2015 largely driven by technological obsolescence of some of the key technologies included in these products. The primary technologies relate to Internet security and authentication mechanisms that were state-of-the-art in 2007 when we built them into our products but have since proven to be vulnerable. Since mid-2015 we have been offering migration services free of charge for Customers who have paid Eyefi Premium accounts. We will continue to offer this service migrating your Eyefi View data to Eyefi Cloud. You can request a migration here. For those customers that wish to use an Eyefi Mobi Pro card in place of their earlier generation products, we have also made a limited quantity available at a deep discount, see details here if you wish to take advantage of this offer.

Please note that we will maintain our customer service Web site and content for all customers. The support site includes detailed explanations for how to accomplish migration to Eyefi Mobi/Mobi Pro and Eyefi Cloud services. We are grateful to all the customers around the world that used Eye-Fi products in the past as well as for our newest customers. The EOL of a product line is always difficult and we have made every effort to minimize the impact of this change on our customers. Thanks for your loyalty and understanding.

You might also go to the library for the most recent Writer's Digest. Last I looked some years ago, it has extensive information, of course emphasizing writing, but a lot of detail on what audience a publication targets.

I should have added that the G15/16 have a viewfinder, although monitoring the screen is a good idea to overcome parallax.

Thanks for two valuable piece of information. I think after researching based on these two posts, I am going to hold off on any action. I think I'll be better off with a modern flash designed to work with the D5300.

I hate to see old equipment go to waste. I have a very old, but in good shape, Vivitar r285 flash designed to attach to a camera’s hot shoe, but with the connection a cord for the X flash. Anyone have suggestions how to use if on a Nikon D5300, assuming I could find a cord?

Thanks. Love the Hedgehog.

We had wonderful photos and luck in 2013 with our Canon Powershot G15 for travels in England and Paris. Since then, Canon released the G16.

One photo in particular sealed my love for the camera: a no-flash shot inside Notre Dame. One day I'll figure out how to post to this forum. I am still a newbee.
