I have PSE and the Canon suite of photo editing software. But I cannot find a way to do what I think should be simple: Let's say I have four photos taken in rapid succession and I want to keep only one. Is there a way to see all four in larger-than-thumbnail size on a single screen so I can select among them (and then delete the rest)? Is there a program that does this that I should get -- I can come back from a vacation with 2,000 shots, most deserve to be dumped but I don't do it on the fly.

Thanks.

I use PhotoMechanic, a program that many professional sportshooters and photojournalists swear by. It is very fast, and I have barely begun to explore the depth of its many other features. Here is a description from the CameraBits.com website:

"Photo Mechanic is a standalone image browser and workflow accelerator that lets you view your digital photos with convenience and speed. Photo Mechanic’s super fast browsing and its ability to quickly Ingest, Edit, and Export your photos, takes the hard work out of your workflow. Its powerful batch processing, full support of IPTC and Exif metadata, and innovative use of image variables and code replacements, make Photo Mechanic an indispensable tool for digital photographers."

As a member of a few bird and wildlife pages on Facebook, I am amazed by the sharpness and quality of some of the images.
I have been trying to take photos like that, but I am not there yet.
Can anyone give me any tips? I think that sometimes I over process images in order to compensate for the poor out-of-the-camera image.
Are there any good websites or tutorials? Can you recommend some advanced books?

I have found this site to be very helpful. Lots and lots of good info there:

My walking-around combo for birds lately has been a Canon 5DMk3 with a 100-400 zoom and a 1.4X TC, for 560mm. Manual mode, 1/1600sec at f11. Auto ISO. Handheld.

Rich,

PayPal just notified me that GTA International Inc (Cowboy Studios) has refunded my payment for that misrepresented eyepiece extender.

Hope your luck is as good! BTW, if I remember correctly, I had to open a new account to get an email to work so I could explain the problem.

Rich, I'm guessing that this part is the supposed eyecup "extender" for a Canon 5DMK3 that turns out to be just a Chinese ripoff of a replacement eyecup.

Surprisingly, I had no trouble contacting them by email and got a quick reply with a RMA return order number. Returned the part, BUT it has been about a week and no refund yet to my PayPal account. Reserving judgement for a while longer.

Like you said, just glad it wasn't an expensive or important part. Live and learn. Again.

I'd guess by now that you might have received the so-called "extender" from Cowboy Studios and were disappointed to learn that it was just a JJC EC-5 replacement for the Canon eyecup, no extension whatsoever.

I did a long search a while back, and at one time such an extension was made and sold by a Chinese supplier, but is no longer available.

I've just started the process to return the EC-5 I got today from Cowboy Studios. Not expecting that it will be a successful return, but it's possible.

The search for a 5DMk3 eyecup extender continues...

I shoot BIF and dog sports with a 5DMk3 and the new version 100-400mm with the old version Canon 1.4 extender, for a max of 560mm. The center focus, spot focus, and four adjoining focus points all work OK with this combo; a poor man's version of that new $9000 200-400mm zoom with integral 1.4X extender. LOL!

Dee,

Here is a photo that came out of my 21MP camera. For the first time, probably ever, I liked it just as it was, with no cropping. Used the Photoshop Automate feature to resize it, and Save for Web also. Ended up as a 347KB JPG file for the web.

" At the same time, the pics come out of the camera at 6-7 MP and that is too large for me to post to my web. Therefore, since I know that I must crop to be able to do that I try to take the pic a little larger (wider?) than what I want to end up with."

Dee Dee, I think you do have a misunderstanding that is messing you up. You don't automatically have to crop in order to get your file size down to web size use. Read up on how to resize files in post processing to web use size and then you can crop only when you want to, for esthetic considerations.

Good luck,
Marshall

What do you all use for a beanbag and what do you put in it

I bought a 5lb bag of mixed birdseed at Tractor Supply and just left it in its plastic bag. Put that in one of my wife's cloth grocery shopping bags and tied together the handle ends.

Works fine.

I didn't know it, but in addition to being an exceptional political cartoonist, David Horsey also writes a wicked political commentary for the LA Times. This column goes along with that cartoon:

I'm hoping the same thing. It's going to be an uphill fight, but Alison is within the margin of error in the latest Lexington Herald-Leader poll.

That is a wonderful political cartoon. McConnell is such a sleazeball; and has been for 30 years!

hi, photographer peeps!

so i'm just at the very beginning of getting acquainted with my new DSLR. i really would love to take a class.

however, i've created a learning experience for myself and i'm a wee bit nervous. i will be taking photos of some of my former students (5 year olds) and their families - they get photos (hopefully!), and i get shooting practice. like, soon. i offered to do this because i thought it was a window of opportunity that would be helpful and push me forward. i don't really feel ready!

i am in the process of trying to learn manual mode. i am far from comfortable with it. but for these family excursions, i want to learn while also knowing i can produce some reliable photos to share. is there a mode you recommend as a starting point with those goals in mind (i'm thinking Av/ Tv...which of course i have to practice)?

all input will be much appreciated. thanks.

Here's an excerpt from a book by Scott Kelby with an interesting take on his use of "P" (Program) mode. Might help when you are trying to get spontaneous photos of the 5-year-olds!

This is the first camera I have owned that has two different types of memory cards. I would like to set up the SD card for jpg's and the CF for raw. I mainly shoot raw and have the CF card set for that but every time I try to set the SD card it changes both cards. I don't want to shoot raw & jpg at the same time.

Is it possible to set these cards up independently?

Jim D

Yes, you can set the cards to record separately. It is in the yellow set of menus (Tools), the first one. Record function+card/folder sel.

I just received my Canon 5D III today. Put a charged battery and formatted cards, a 16 GB CF and a 64 GB SD, in it and set the date and time. I took a quick shot with it and then looked at it, it was number one! I can't ask for more then that! Used, I don't think so!

I shoot wildlife, mainly birds, often BIF. I am looking for some hints on setting up the camera. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Using the "Q" button I did change to raw, continuous and A1 Servo but now could use some help. The menu is so much different than my 7D!

Going to look for BBF settings and the different focus points. Trying to decide what to use and when. Suggestions are going to be very welcomed while I try to learn to use this camera!
