The T3i is a step up from the T3 and does a fine job. The T5i is another step up and operates pretty much the same. Whether or not that is worth it to you would be up to you. You can compare specs here:

My personal opinion is to do an upgrade to the T3i for minimal cost and then, when you are ready and want to move up again, look at the 70D or 6D. Buying a refurb from Canon, or a used or refurb from a reputable dealer such as B&H is a good way to go. Buying used from an individual can be a good deal but is also a lot riskier.
If you want to stay in your current comfort zone then go with the T3i is my advice.
I had a T3i and the fold out LCD screen was a nice feature IMO.

The t3i is a good upgrade from the t3 for the cost ($100 more than the t3). The t5i ($250 more than the t3) not so much unless the touch screen or in camera HDR is important to you, but it does not sound like it is.

As good as this camera sounds, (I say this as I wipe the drool of my keyboard) Think I'd let 'em run it in production for at least a few months. Just let the techies debug it first.

YOU BAS***D!!! You have been using my computer!!! The keyboard is all covered in...

Oh, that's me drooling too...

Nevermind.

As first threads go, actually as even 20th threads go, yours is well worded and VERY well titled. The title clearly sets up the issue and your comment nicely elaborates on your concerns.

Welcome!

<snip> A viable alternative is the new SX60 HS P&S coming out October 16 for $549.00. It's lens alone (65x) will cover more range than 4 standard Canon lens, and it shoots in RAW (Canon .cr2 format).

Great suggestion for this OP. No issue of buying in to a lens system. The SX60 HS, should cover anything you want to do during your formative period. You will learn what subjects and focal lengths you enjoy. It is easier to tote around than a body with a group of lenses. Later, after you have experienced a range of shooting, you might want to move into a DSLR or possibly, by then, an advanced mirrorless system.

Quite frankly they are as as simple as ever. Just switch to full manual and throw away the book.

I guess you are happy not using those things that the tax pays for. Do you hover 2 feet above the sidewalk, when you leave your front door. Do you invite burglars to your house in case the police try to stop them? When it's dark and the streetlights come on do you close your eyes in case you see things lit up? Do you shop at food stores who supply food not inspected by anybody, in case they might have been found unfit for human consumption? Do you raise your own rats to run around your house to take the place of those the vermin crew destroy? And so on.

That all comes under several other topics like:

Yeah, but why should I pay for it?!!???

Taxes are for suckers!!!

But they only use my taxes for the bad things, so I should not pay any taxes!!!

But what about freedom!!!??? I need to be free to enjoy what other people pay for!!!

You don’t understand!!! I am completely independent and self-sufficient!!!! I live off the land (that I expect others to die to protect!)

And on, and on, and on….

Would like to point out the recent "spot" issue with some of the Nikon cameras. If you did not have a good warranty, you could have been out of luck.

I have been a Rebel 4Ti user now since January 2014 and I must tell you that it still amazes me, even after being a 4-year 'veteran' of photography. Still, I am considering a switch to the Nikon D5200 so that I can take advantage of the 24 megapixels of additional details and all of the other tools the D5200 provides.

I thought about the D7200 (whose release date is yet unknown), but thought, just maybe, I might be getting ahead of myself. Bit by bit, day by day, almost every day of the week, I think I am gradually improving my skills and technique without being a 'professional' photographer. So, starting off yesterday, I set the 4Ti to take pictures from the aperture-oriented focus (AV), and was amazed at some of the photos I was producing. The detail is incredible.

You should also consider the new 7D II. Compatable with whatever lenses you have for the 4ti.

Thank you for contacting Canon product support. I understand that you have questions about the LP-E6n and LP-E6. I can address this.

The LP-E6n and LP-E6 use the same charger. However, regarding backward compatibility of the LP-E6n with previous models that use the LP-E6, additional compatibility information is still pending.

Please feel free to contact us with any other questions or concerns. Thank you for choosing Canon.

No no...what I'm saying is that since the camera reduces noise etc when it converts an image to JPG it is already cleaned up to an extent. The RAW files are just that...raw. They will show how much noise is in the file and what form the noise will take.

Ahh. Point taken.
