I toured Kenya for 10 days a month ago. I took my Nikon D7100 and rented another like it. My D7100 wore my 18-200VR2 lens and the rental wore my (recently purchased) Nikon 200-500mm lens. I kept my camera on its strap around my neck to be readily available and the rental with the big zoom was in my camera bag. When I was in the 4WD vehicle for a "game drive" I made that camera easily available. The driver generally gave us plenty of time to go between cameras when we stopped to view game. Both lenses (and cameras) had plenty of use, but the vast majority were done with the 18-200 lens. OTOH, some shots would not have been possible without the longer lens.

I'm still in the process of working PP with my photos, so am not able yet to post any. I'm also still undecided what organization I will use for posting to Flickr.

FWIW, I did do the hot-air balloon ride. It was great! Our pilot kept the balloon low so we had excellent views of the wildlife. Had a full breakfast in the field (with tablecloths and everything!) waiting for us when we landed.

One warning--plastic bags (including zip-lock) are forbidden in Kenya. You'll have to find some substitute for those.

Thank you David ... most helpful info. re: lenses. And yes I've already heard plastic bags are not allowed & I'm not inclined to try to sneak things in. But appreciate that advice. I may get sleeves for the 2 bodies I'm taking as suggested by another Hog ... for use when it's really dusty. I'm envious of you taking a balloon ride. I don't yet have our precise itinerary, but I'm hoping we can go for one. Appreciate the feedback & I look forward to seeing your photos. So hope you post some on UHH or at least let us know if you use Flickr. Would enjoy seeing them. Thanks for taking the time to post.

Thank you rhc7. That sounds like good advice given what I've read so far. Particularly leaving the lenses on, until I get back to the room. Thanks for looking & commenting.

Great captures Keith ... both you & the birds. I'm jealous as all get out. Thinking I should be down there shooting vs. up here preparing for winter!!!!! Thanks for sharing.

PS: Loved the little droplets of water in the 3rd one & is that a bird that was captured in the 4th one?

You’ll love it. Stay tuned - I’ll post more from our trip if they keep the power on long enough here in “The People’s Republic of Northern California”!

I shall look forward to it. And good luck ... been reading stories about the awful fires, wind & power outages out your way. Stay safe.

Thanks so much Frank. She is incredibly maintained and it’s done by a combination of the government and private donations. All of the museums in Scotland are free!

Scotland is another item on my list of places to go.

One additional note: The 1.4 can also be used on a full frame body with the 400.

Got it ... thanks for adding that. Appreciate it.

We stayed at the conservancy.... we got great pictures of the chimps. It’s so beautiful there, scenery looks like a painting. Our camp offered a night safari -we found hyenas are actually cute when they are asleep. We also saw a pride of lions sleeping on each other. And, we saw an aardvark active at night. While they have many ‘common’ zebras, we also saw a grevy’s zebra. So, lots to see - more rhinos than we saw at other parks.

Thanks ling99 ... I'm looking forward to that location as well. Appreciate your additional comment.

My pleasure on the info. I forgot to mention 2 things...

1- ALWAYS have your smaller zoom camera with you. We were walking to dinner and saw bush babies jumping from trees and I caught was is probably the best photo of the trip.

2- A very wide angle lens might be ok for those rare savanna shots...we went to the dunes of Soussesvlei so it was a preplanned deal. But something to consider.

Thanks RWebb76 ... thought about a wide angle but I think that's down the list a ways. Appreciate the suggestion of the small zoom at hand. And also appreciate you taking the time to clarify.
