What they say and what they do are two different things. I was told this by one of their buyers when I wanted to trade my A6000 for a refurbished Nikon D7200. My trade in included two lenses. I checked out what the equipment was selling for on their site, calculated what 70% was and thought that is what I would get. I got much less than that in trade even after negotiating a higher trade in amount for equipment that they considered in mint condition. They stated that they had many used A6000’s in stock so the price they could give me had to be reduced. My only beef is that is not what they led me to believe at the onset when I was buying the D7200. Realistically, you would be better off selling it through this site’s classified section.

This is exactly what Adorama told me ... That they had many in inventory so they could not give me the 70%. Their offer was under 50%. I did notice that even though they had so many in inventory, they had not reduced their selling price.

👍👍 couldn’t agree more. My “Ls” are tack sharp and rock solid - I calibrate each and wouldn’t trade them either. I am sure there are other excellent third party lenses, but my 100-400L and EX1.4 on a FF look just fine to my old eyes.

TriX, am I correct in assuming that it is the camera that I need to calibrate, and not the lens? So, if I want to use the lens with both the old 70D and the new 5Div I would need to calibrate both cameras? Thanks.

I recently switched from a 70D APS-C to a full frame 5D IV. I shoot mainly portraits, sports events, and some nature and landscape photography. I also shoot dogs for a local animal rescue. I currently have a 24-70 f/2.8, a 70-200 f/2.8 and a 50mm f/1.4. While I still have a max effective focal length of 320mm with the 70D, I only have a max focal length of 200m when using the 5D IV. I'm considering getting either a 2x extender, or a 100-400 f/4.5 - 5.6. I have never used an extender before and am wondering if this is a viable option, since the 100-400 is about 4 times the cost of the extender. I do plan to keep the 70D, and if all else fails I could use that camera when I need the extended reach. Any advice on the pros and cons of using an extender would be appreciated. Thanks.

Just wanted to close the loop and thank everyone for their insight. I ended up ordering the 100-400 based on my own research and most of the recommendations in this discussion. Based on the type of photography I do, I don't think I need a focal length >400mm; however, if I do need the extra reach, I can get an effective focal length of 640mm by pairing it with the crop sensor 70D. Again, thanks everyone.

I find it interesting that when some members of the Ugly Hedgehog have a difference of opinion with you that instead of providing facts or evidence to support their view or at least be able to explain their post or image, they instead put you on their Ignore List. It seems odd too when some of these people seem to welcome comments (but don't in reality). I have no one on my Ignore List, that is not to say that I don't find some UHH'ers annoying. But even the obnoxious, sarcastic, and controversial members still often have something valid or useful to say. Some of us just have free tongues and wicked senses of humor, others very thin skin and fragile egos. That is, some run and hide behind IGNORE-ance. If presented with information and serious explanations most of us are reasonable.

In the few examples I am thinking of, if they un-froze their posts they might find I for one have others things that they may appreciate and agree with. My opinion can change or react to something different differently. Keeping the flow of communication open is always best. Photography can be both an Art and a Science, it is certainly Technology and a lot of facts and opinions.

Also interesting that some folks are extremely active on their own posts, but have no interest in contributing to discussions initiated by others.

Also consider the 150-600mm Tamron G2 or Sigma S and C variants. 1/2 or less of the 100-400 canon.

Another UHHer was looking to compare the 150-600 vs a cropped photo from the 70-200 on a 2x extender to see which was better....the 2x iii extender is only just under 1/2 the cost of the 150-600 sigmaC as an example or a 1/3 of the G2.

Seeing as you have a 5D iv and the 150-600 S, is that the lens you would recommend instead of the C or the G2? Thanks.

A similar question came up last week also asking about the use of a 2x extender to get to 400mm or a lens covering 100-400 that can be extended to 560mm.

Thanks so much for the link. One comment you made stood out in particular: "From a practical standpoint, if you want to shoot at 400mm, the 100-400L II is a better choice. The results will be sharper between 100 and 400 than the 70-200 extended by the 2x as well as having a wider aperture available during shorter portions of the zoom."

Everything I've read, here and elsewhere, suggests that I go with the 100-400. However, as crazydaddio pointed out, I owe it to myself to consider the 100-600 Tamron or Sigma. Looks like I have a bit more research to do.

Thanks CHG_CANON and crazydaddio.

The Canon extenders only work on specified lenses. The 1.4x causes very little IQ loss, the 2.0x a bit more unless used on the highest grade prime teles-and those are several thousand each.

Here is the chart for the 2.0x: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/FrameWork/charts/canon2xExtender.html
And for the 1.4x: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/FrameWork/charts/canon1_4xExtender.html

Your only lens that will work with an extender is the 70-200

Use the 1.4x III with a 100-400L mk II on a 7DII body. Your 70D will not AF with the extender on any lens slower than a f/2.8 which becomes an f/5.6 with a 1.4x. Your 5DIV will AF on f/8.0 or faster. An 80D will AF at f/8.0 and give you 24MP so if you can swing it trade the 70D to cover part of the cost of an 80D body, all your lenses will still work.

Thanks, Robert. It looks like a converter may not be the solution. I'm now thinking that getting a 100-400 may be a more optimal solution, and would work with both cameras. I was just a bit hesitant given the almost $2,000 price tag of the 100-400. I'll do a search for 100-400 lens comparisons to see if there are any other brands that could provide a better value than the Canon.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks, Hank. Just what I was looking for. It seems, overall, the cons outweigh the pros.

It is easy to take for granted the speed at which modern cameras can take a picture once the shutter button is pressed down. It wasn't always like this.

This is a blow hole on the southern side of Kauai. 15 years ago, I was trying to capture this blowing at full force. But I had a problem. It took several seconds from the time I pressed the shutter until the picture was taken. I recall trying to time it and taking many, many pictures, just trying to capture at the peak. But it didn't stay very long. The first image is a representative picture of all those failed attempts, missing that peak every single time. Finally I did it!

On a more recent trip back, I was able to use a burst and capture it starting, raising to peak, and then coming back down. But that wasn't the way it worked 15 years ago.

In two weeks I'll be going on a trip to Alabama and then on to Florida. I'll be snorkeling the keys while I'm there also.

The yellow trip 35 is my wife's, the red trip is for color film, the black trip is for black and white. The FM2N is for anything in low light or anything oddball that the trip won't be able to do.

I'll push the Tri-X for the low light stuff and shoot the double XX during the day.

The color is for general Florida stuff if it's colorful and the underwater camera is for snorkeling.

It looks like a lot but I won't be carrying it all at once, I'll shoot the black and white trip 35 90% of the time like I do when home.

PS: The 120 film snuck in there by accident...it won't be going with me.
