I go back and forth between an online service and printing myself on a Canon P-100.

I've had good experiences with Adoramapix.com, and have a big order in to them now. Plan to do a side by side comparison to my printing when I get them, but don't expect to see much, if any difference.

Printing yourself gives immediate feedback, and changes can be made; ordering online has a several day lag time.

Adorama accepts up to 60 MB in size files, JPEG (.jpg, .jpeg) 8-bit, sRGB or TIFF (.tif, .tiff) 8-bit sRGB with no compression.

They also give one the option of printing the file exactly as sent, or having their equipment and/or technicians tweak the file, and there is a daunting array of choices as to sizes, paper finishes, crop options, border or borderless, etc.

Hope this helps,

Marshall

So I probably will go for a 100-400 II and get a 1.4 III to go with it.

I think that would be a wise decision, after much experimentation that is what I did. For me, using a 2X with my 100-400 was a step (and stop) too far.

Yes, definitely New Zealand, as I can read N. Z. Government on the building behind the car. There is also what looks like the US State Department Seal on the building wall. Maybe a US embassy or consulate in that building?

I couldn't make out anything about the emblem on the front of the car.

Looks like Kaikoura Motor Company on the windshield. And maybe Christchurch Kaikoura Blenheim on the side.

Doesn't look like a "stagehand" to me.

That's a fine set of bird photos! Looks like you're well on your way, and the BIF mastery will come in time, I'm sure.

If you haven't already, check out this site. Bill Majorus has put out an incredible amount of information at his website:

I submitted a screenshot of your bird photo to birdsnap.com, and they ID it as a grey jay, as others have suggested. Kingbird was a good first guess; we have them here in KY and they are fun to watch, too.

Hello Mac,

Don't know why you are being such a hard case on this, but you are flat wrong about the OP's image not being a blue heron. And since you put up yours, here are some of mine.

Definitely a Great Blue Heron. Relatively common around ponds and marshes here in Kentucky. My favorite bird, and I've taken thousands of shots of them, the latest just this morning in Georgetown, KY.

The south end of a north bound heron is my most usual shot. Getting one flying toward you will really get your heart racing!

A screen shot of just the bird without the reflection submitted to birdsnap.com says it is likely a great egret. It also gave five other possibilities, most of which could be eliminated out of hand.

I post bird shots on some of the birding sites, and it is embarrassing to mis-id, so I use all available help. Try birdsnap.com or the Merlin app for a phone. Their data base is constantly increasing and getting more reliable all the time.

Packing for a trip is the worst part. I always leave something at home that I should have brought, or bring something that I should have left at home. At least I'll have the car for this trip, so I can bring as much as I want.

On Sunday, I leave for Provincetown for a week with a group of painters. Every year, a painting instructor friend runs a teaching session there. I go for the photography and just to get away. It's enough having to pack the clothes, photo gear, MacBook, and chargers. If I had to pack painting supplies as well, I'd have a nervous breakdown. I'm about 50% ready, with two days left, so I'm on schedule. My son will be looking after the dogs and the house, so that's one less thing to worry about. I hope to have some "snapshots" to post when I get back.

Provincetown is one of those 'special places' and the farthest east one can drive and not be in the ocean. My wife and I lived there forty years ago and it was a great place to be. Worked as a carpenter for a couple of brothers who painted houses, some of them were the houses of famous artists that lived there, Hans Hoffman is one who comes to mind. At that time there were still a few people living in the dunes. As they died out or left,
the National Seashore was taking them over.

I've heard reports that it is not as special now; things change and people do too.

Check out the Beech Forest in the National Seashore. I hope it is still there and the dunes haven't overtaken it!

Have you watched a video on your laptop from a card before, or is this your first time? Sounds like you are trying to open a video file using an image application. On my Mac a video file automatically opens in Quicktime, unless I click to the "open with" option and pick something else, such as Flip4Mac or some other video app.

Anyway, whatever platform you use, there should be a program on there that will open a video for you, but the computer has to first understand that it is a video file.

Possibly a female red-winged blackbird.
they also have the red epaulets on their shoulders, though not near as prominent or vibrant as the male.
