In my real job I am a forensic psychologist with a focus on violence against kids, so your point is well taken. But, I was thinking more in terms of kids on a soccer field, at the fair, etc. Global pictures of many kids in action, where parents are aware of what you are doing. I do see a major problem with taking photos of children in some situations, like going to a gym to photograph unsuspecting kids in gymnastics class, trying to be as unobtrusive as possible, and so on. Hope that clears it up.
If the pictures are for your personal viewing, then I do not see a problem. Selling them is different, especially if there is a focus on one particular person engaged in a particular action, like the example in the original post.
I would think you do not require her permission if you posted the photo on Facebook. Selling the photo is entirely different, particularly if you can see her face. Ethically, you should obtain her permission.
I also considered a third party flash for my Canon 50D, but eventually settled on the Speedlite 430EXII. No regrets, despite the increased cost. I would not go with the cheap flash, as you will probably just end up replacing it later anyway.
I like what you did with this photo. It has a real nice feel about it. Kind of like a welcoming feeling. Hard to explain, but I like it.
If you are just starting to use pp software, you may want to start with a free program, like Picassa. If you purchase, PS10 is probably the way to go. Lots of tips and tutorials on it, everyone is familiar with it, and probably the best overall program for your dollar.
They are all good shots. I like #3 followed by #1.
I'm sure there are a number of great macro-specific lenses out there. One of the many reasons I went with the canon 100 mm 2.8 (rather than the 50 or 60 mm)is that you do not have to get as close to your subject when photographing. This can make a big difference if you photograph bugs, bees on flowers, etc.
Hi: A long-time reader to the forum, but a first-time responder. I just picked up a canon 100mm f2.8 macro lens yesterday. Love it. Pricey, but a true macro, and I believe you get what you pay for in camera equipment, but that doesn't mean you have to buy new. You can get great used eqipment, but if interested in macro photography, do tyr to get a true macro lens.
