Hi All,
I just got a Nikon TC 20E III teleconverter for my nikon 200-500 lens. I am shooting with a Nikon D500 body. I did check to see that AF should work with this combo however, the lens searches for focus constantly and will not settle on any subject.....not even a tree in the yard! Is the teleconverter defective or is the info I found on af wrong? TIA!!

The auto focus on your camera will not work above f8. Your combo is delivering a f11, which means your camera WILL NOT AUTOFOCUS with the TC20C III. If you had checked with Nikon ahead of time they would have told you this.

But if both cameras are 24 MP and the A9 shot is cropped to equal the field of view of the A6400, there will be fewer pixels in that image than in the one from the A6400. Also, the placement of the focus spot would not be as accurate, as in placing the focus spot right on the eye. Am I correct in this thinking?

Yes, to a point. A cropped sensor camera can, from the same distance, supply more megapixels on the bird or animal than a FF, if both are 24 MP.
However, if he got the a6600, it also has eye animal focus like the a9 and a9II. And currently Sony has $200.00 off on the body. I just ordered mine today and it included a class II card and camera bag, WOW, what a deal. And now my 200-600 becomes a 300-900 angle of view, OH BOY, will wonders never stop.

I recently purchased a Sony A9 along with the new Sony 200-600mm lens and the 1.4X teleconverter. Previously I shot with a cropped frame Nikon D7200 and the first generation Tamron 150-600 mm lens. I fully understood that the A9 is a full frame camera with a wider field of view, but the transition from the cropped frame Nikon has been difficult, especially for small birds. I am displeased with the use of the TC as it means shooting at f9 at 600 mm with the Sony lens. The midwinter sun is especially weak now and a high ISO is needed that results in a lot of noise.

The vast majority of my shooting is what I call travel wildlife photography. I go to international destinations where wildlife is abundant. While there, I am as happy to shoot small birds as I am tigers, jaguars, or Komodo dragons. I shoot handheld as a tripod is too unwieldy for the situations I experience, not to mention the limited weight allowed by airlines. Of course, each destination is different, varying from excellent lighting to dark forests.

I am considering getting the A6400 to use for the smaller wildlife species, and change cameras as needed for the situation at hand. Is this a valid consideration, or is it better to crop down from the A9 to get the same field of view? I understand that doing that would result in an image containing fewer pixels. Or should I use the teleconverter in spite of the lack of light? I do love the A9 and the electronic shutter as well as the amazing tracking ability, so going back to the Nikon system is not a possibility.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I have the same rig and have had the firmware updated for eye focus. You must learn grasshopper, HOW, to get closer to your game. I have had no issues but I may start to carry the Sony A6600 camera with me as it also has eye animal focus too. Interesting side note, the A6600 is on sale today at B&H, funny thing, it is listed for $200.00 less than Abe's Camera (by the way, I do not like Abe's at all, just found it interesting that they do not currently have the lowest price on the A6600)
But anyway, I am going to get the A6600 at this price. Another interesting thing, this is Sony's flagship APS sensor camera and they just brought it out and it's newly discounted. Anyway, I am going to order it to make that 200-600 a 300-900, WOW.

I found myself going to shoot xmas lights with the latest 105mm 2.8 macro nikkor with VR, on my Nikon D850. As I'd last been shooting closeups, the lens showed the lights out of focus in the extreme, and in an interesting way. One of them is at

Someone pointed out that, while the lights in the middle are nearly if not perfectly round, others are more ovoid. My question is why, and what might be done to assure that all the lights appeared (nearly) perfectly round?

(I tried to attach an image, but I guess that's another technique I haven't mastered yet.)

They are shaped by the curvature of the glass of your lens.

So I just discovered a box store a half hour from where I recently moved. What a wonderful surprise. I’m still fairly new to all of this. I bought a D850 as my starter camera which caused quite a stir on this forum ;). But I love my new camera and could not be happier with my decision. I will grow with it for a long time. I am ready to add a new lens to take pictures of my brand new and older grandkids. All of them will be here for Christmas. I can’t really get both right now so I’m wondering if a 50mm or an 85mm would be most useful and why? I’d like to take both single portraits and a group setting. Thanks in advance for your responses.

Actually, either one will give you results. If it is a 50 1.8 and an 85 1.8 you are looking at. I own both and to be truthful I use a Nikon 28 1.8 on my lens most of the time. But, if I was going to pick one of the two you are considering for groups and singles, it would be the 50 1.8 e. You can do singles with it and groups would be much easier with the 50 vs. the 85. When I am shooting my young relations I generally use the 28. But if I were to get serious and want the background to go out I would use the 50 1.8 almost wide open. Make sure the eyes are in focus, if nothing else is in focus, it's OK, but the eyes MUST be in focus. I have found my Sony a9 particularly excellent at this feature. When I upgraded the software it was a big difference. You can even set it for animal eyes, I shot a Bobcat yesterday coming at me with a rabbit in it's mouth and the eyes are nailed sharp.
Any way, I digress, the 50 1.8 e is a fantastically sharp lens that will serve you well for years and years to come. I enjoy mine a lot, you will too.
AND, it is currently on sale.

Most Nikon lenses come with a 5 year warranty, but not all. Check with Nikon at 1-800-645-6687.

I have and enjoy my Nikon 18-140mm 3.5-5.6 Lens, I just bought, but have not received as yet, a Nikon 10-20mm Lens which I hope will assist me in my interest of pursuing Landscape Photography. I enjoy reading Experience and opinions in this new Nikon wide angle lens.

The 10-20 is a great lens. Watch distortion at 10mm however, especially at the corners.

I have (been screwed) on eBay.

Hard to believe, ebay stands behind the seller. All you needed to do was open a case on ebay and they would have backed you. DID YOU DO THIS? I doubt it. You just want to vent don't you.
I have done business for over 15 years on ebay. It is honest and has a great protection protocol that guarantees a full refund within 30 days of purchase, no questions asked, buyer protected 100% of the time.

Any help would be appreciated. I can't find a solution in the manual.

First, push the two button reset on your D810. Second, make sure all the contacts are clean on body and lens. Third, make sure the auto focus switch on your lens is turned to M/A and not M.
If all else fails call Nikon at 1-800-645-6687 and ask for technical assistance.
Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

Tripods now days all cost a lot for a good one then the head that you get can set you back quite abit also. Anyway just looking right now so anyone use a Robus tripod?

Looks good to me, just checked it out on B&H. You should match such a nice piece of equipment with another, get this.

I am needing to make some extra money since my husband passed. I'm always doing photos for no charge. My daughters tells me and others also how nice they look. My problem is I'm afraid they are not good enough and if so I have no idea what to charge. I am posting some I did today. Please give honest opinions, open to constructive criticism. TIA

I sell cards to local businesses for resale. If they buy 50 + cards from me I make $1.50 per card. If I sell the same card at one of my photo shows, I make $2.00 per card. Envelopes included of course.

Anyone know what is up with them?

They were one of my favorites: outstanding service. But their web site is down.

I stick with B&H, Adorama, and Campus Camera in Kent Ohio. I do not worry about anything as these three have never let me down.
When I needed the new Sony 200-600 lens, Campus Camera got in touch with their Sony rep. and I had it in one week. They also have the same prices as B&H and Adorama.
