The only "shooting" permitted in Kenya is with a camera--hunting has been prohibited since 1977. So yes, there were many opportunities to take photos from the balloon. The pilot caused the balloon to rotate such that everyone got a view in every direction. The basket is configured such that every passenger is next to an edge. Interesting David ... & of course, I understand shooting is for photography. Your description makes it sound like a great experience to have. Thanks for your comments.

Well, I don't know. But if he won't I think we should offer up an old unseasoned ex Marine. Maybe he is one of those New England type Lions who thinks spicy is an extra half shake from the ground black pepper container

You got a belly laugh out of me on that one. Touche!!!!

Thanks! Yesterday the Doe with the split ear was at 5 yards from the house eating Iris in the garden. The Wife was not amused.

Would it improve her mood if you told her that got a belly laugh out of me?!?!?!? I found that idea quite funny. It also sounds like your Bride grows nice tender flowers. She should be complimented that doe chose those to munch on!!!!! ;)

In the manner most people look at photos, they do look the same ... however on download & close-up, the noise (which I didn't consider all that bad) in the edited version is a lot less. Either way, a great shot.

Hey, whatever it takes to support the local wildlife populations!

Question is ... would a self-respecting Lion eat an old salty sea dog?!?!?!?

The morning after my balloon ride, while on a game drive, there were 8 hot-air balloons getting airborne in the area. Apparently it is a fairly widespread option, so you may be lucky. Our balloon basket held 12 passengers and 12 of my group's 20 members did it. It was not my first balloon ride--I did one at Moab, Utah a few years ago, and it flew over Arches National Park. Awesome!

I would love to do a balloon ride over Arches ... what a sight that must have been. And thanks for the encouragement re: the availability of balloons in Kenya. Did 12 passengers allow for you to do any shooting? I would think it would be a case of picking your spot in the basket & taking what ever comes along on your side?

The group we're going with is supposed to be around 10 shooters ... so I'm hoping that we'll be spread out between different vehicles & if there is a balloon ride, that won't be crowded, I'd jump on it in a heartbeat.

I like my mid level Leupold 10X42 a lot. Zeiss, Leica, Vortex, Cabelas and upper tier Nikon all make very nice glass well below $500. For my eyes, the 10X42 field of view is easier for scanning compared to a 8X28 or 10X28, even though they are bigger. I have used the 10X28 but found that they were good for viewing known animals from distances but not quite as good at scanning to initially spot the animals.

Thanks. I have several pairs of binoculars around so will not be buying a pair for this trip. I happen to have the Leupold 10x42 which I too like a lot. They're relatively compact, so think I'll go with them. 10x50's are better for lower light, but also as another Hog noted, like carrying another camera. Thanks for the clarification.

Yeah, that's probably why I haven't made much progress learning the program I have about decided that if I get a photo that I wouldn't post or print then I delete it and try again.
Fortunately I'm going to Africa in February with fellow UHH'r fbeaston from Vermont. He is going to bring his computer and try to teach this old dog some new tricks during our down time. Maybe he will be able to change my mind about this whole PP paradigm. We'll see...

I think it will be a good test of the old saying about old dogs & new tricks!!!!! And of course, trying to teach an old Sea-dog might increase the level of difficulty ... but hey, I think there's hope for you Keith!!!! Either that or feed you to the lions!!!!! ;)

Binos — I recommend Zeiss Victory — compact binos. 10X28. 10 power very helpful over 8 power. Nice and small, so they are easy to wear while handling cameras — or put in pocket. There are also some entry level Zeiss — just stay away from standard size as it’s like carrying another camera. As far as power, Jeep’s should always have plenty of power so you don’t need a power strip. I will bring a short extension cord, so I can use one converter and have 3 US outlets. Again, check with guide to be sure you will be in an open top Jeep — not open side. Also get light weight, long sleeve safari shirt — nice to have sleeves for sun protection - will keep you cooler.

Fbeaston, thanks for your kind comments. The humanitarian work that I do really is a lot of fun and a great way to make friends. Hopefully, I do some good.

I already own a Panasonic Gx 9. I find myself debating whether or not I should have bought a G9 because of it’s wonderful features, but really like the very small Gx 9 for street shooting and find that I can get most images that I want. I bought my first 4/3 when they were introduced several years ago and like the format.

Some power strips I’m sure will work with both 110 v and 240 v. But many that I checked a few years back at Home Depot we’re 110 v only. I haven’t researched again, but do like my small power strip on Safari.

As for the binocs. My guide had a pair that was impaired so I loaned him mine. My wife had our second pair which was of an equal quality, so no big deal. He coveted them immediately and commented how much better he could pick up wildlife. We all agreed.

Thank you sir ... both for your service & for the info. I haven't started looking for the powerstrip yet, but will. I think my International plug plus a 115 v power strip might work, but I'm going to do some research. Thanks for taking the time to write back. Appreciate it. Also hope you post some shots on UHH.
