I'm not usually much of a fan of black and white photography, but it's stunning with the way you've created the portrait. If you haven't already, this is one you should print and find wall space for.

Like the way this shot shows off the caramel shading in his tabby markings. The focus on paws reminds me of this one I took of the late (and much lamented) Bill the Cat sitting on the keyboard desk in from of my computer. Give your guy a pet from me. :)

Looks like they're having fun. You just can't ruin a good song.

If you believe in fate/karma/whatever then that camera was meant for that young man at that price and not someone on this site. He is obviously thrilled and will spend many hours enjoying that camera. The fact that he is so excited and happy, to me, would be worth the couple of hundred dollars you didn't get. That camera could be a major milestone in his life. Who knows....you may have just helped the next Ansel Adams get his start.

So sorry for your loss. I wish I didn't know how much it hurts. Thank you for sharing the story and attempt to keep the same situation from catching someone else unawares. The pets we lose seem to leave super big holes in our hearts. A funeral director who handles cremations once told me that he's actually had women who failed to return to claim the ashes of their husbands but never anyone who didn't return for those of their pets.

Oops--didn't realize I couldn't attach photo with quick reply.

Was going to add that the crop also avoids the diagonals coming directly from the corner and still keeps the interplay between the bird and the reflection.

Another contender. My eye wanted the yellow and the bird's beak down near the lower right third of the image. The crop

Quick confession: I figured when I posted this that if I were lucky, I'd get maybe one or two replies. Never expected the number of thoughtful (and extremely helpful) replies you guys have offered! My apologies for underestimating the generosity of my fellow Hedgehoggers, and many thanks to all who've replied--from both me and the "residents" at our little shelter who'll be the real beneficiaries of the knowledge you've shared with me. As E.L. said, good photos do boost adoptions, and all of these furry critters deserve loving homes.

Thanks. I'd never come across this tool before this before, but I'm pretty sure that now that I'm aware of it, it will come in handy every now and then.

Adorable dogs, great shots, and wonderful examples of why "get down on their level" is such standard advice to pet photographers!

Thanks, everyone. I had been set on electronic shutter because the noise of the mechanical shutter distracts some of the animals, but I switched to the mechanical shutter today and that seems to have solved the banding problem. Really appreciate all the suggestions.
