If you care about your state, county and city, pay your darn taxes and quit looking for ways to dodge them. Pays for highways, schools, hospitals, fire, police, facilities you benefit from every day. Pay your share.

The taxes get paid to the state as they should. B&H pays them to the state instead of you.

Remember that pretty well every modern camera can be used for Point and Shoot. Get as nice a camera as you are willing to carry around and your budget can support. At a minimum, be sure it has Image Stabilization.

Ever asked yourself how the government can recreate the data on our devices even though you've deleted it? Surprise, deleting doesn't destroy data, on your disk drives or on your cameras media.

Quite right. "Delete" only removes the file's FAT entry, freeing the space for re-use. There are tools that will "Erase" the data by writing over the file with all ones or zeros.

For our purposes in photography, deleting the files by reformatting the FAT table works fine unless we have been shooting top-secret subjects. :)

Having spent a few decades in Information Technology, I like a fresh in-camera format each time I am finished with the images on the card. No reason to leave a used and re-used FAT32 table on the card when you can have a fresh one.

I do not purposly under expose my images (unless it is for the very rare "artistic" reasons), especially as I now have a live histogram in the viewfinder.

Richard, which camera?

Also the Nikon Z6 and Z7 (Said the guy who is not Richard :)

Still have my FM2 and there is still some film in the freezer.

BUT - if I set the mode on my mirrorless to M, turn of auto-ISO, turn off auto WB, and use manual focus I have the same shooting experience without film to process. I could even ignore the on-board light meter and get out my old Sekonic Speedmaster.

Not a big fan of adapters either, but the FTZ is the brickhouse of adapters. It has been working great on the long lenses and it is saving a lot of money. For shorter FLs the new Z lenses make a nice compact setup.

Compared to the price new of long lenses, it is tempting to have an FTZ for each F-mount lens. Much more convenient.

The best shooting mode is the one that works for the shoot. For many shooters that is often full manual. Sometimes it works to let the shutter speed, WB, or ISO float automatically while keeping control over what is critical in the moment - typically the aperture. Program or Full Auto are good for P&S where convenience takes priority over control.

If different situations didn't need different mode settings, our cameras would only have an off-on switch and a shutter release.

It's just a waste of battery power. You can always fix your screw-up in post

Focus? Camera motion? Poor composition? Camera wasn't set the way you thought? Photobomb?

Some stuff just hasta be right before the shoot is finished.

While editing a raw file, the changes are saved as metadata as soon as they are made so there is nothing to save. To export a copy for sharing it will be a jpg. To do further edits in non-raw software the copy will be exported as a tif. If exporting for PS then a psd works too.

Review is always turned off, but if using Playback to check the focus and histogram is chimping then I am guilty.

One person's anecdotal experience: After a string of 6 Nikons in 30 years without incident or failure, I bought a Sony mirrorless that suffered a massive shutter failure after very little use (but out of warranty). Meanwhile I'm loving a new Nikon Z7. Obviously your mileage may vary.

Looking at purchasing a Nikon Z7 with Nikon F4 24-70 lens. Have quote from Abe's of Maine, seems to have best price. As part of the purchase they offer a number of add-on warranty options for 3-5 years, starting at $299 for 3 year extended warranty, up to 5 year "DOP Accidental Damage Warranty" for $699. I'm pretty careful with my camera gear, have never sent something back for repair. Still using my NikonD7000, time to upgrade. Is this something you would recommend? Thoughts on the value of these warranties? Experience with Abe's of Maine?
Thanks,
Wayne

The original question was about the extra-cost extended warranty. The great majority of consumers will come out ahead by banking the cost of each extended warranty offer and then using those funds to cover repairs as needed. This applies to everything, not just photo gear. They wouldn't offer those warranties if they weren't making plenty off them.

I recently started using a Nikon Z with In Body Image Stabilization (IBIS). When a VR Nikkor F-mount lens is mounted with the FTZ adapter, it is barely an exaggeration to suggest one might be able to shoot while jogging! :) The two stabilization systems work together for awesome hand-held ability down in the 1/10 - 1/4 range.

Some of the new Nikkor S lenses for the FF Z's are crazy sharp (50 f/1.8, 85 f/1.8, 24-70 f/4). The challenge is getting a shot that is as sharp as the lens. Much more difficult than opening the wallet.
