I know we could start a library with all the books recommended here, but I thought I'd share one I've used for a few years. This one takes a beginner by the hand and walks them through the whole process of photography. It starts with the basics and has the reader do exercises pertaining to each aspect of photography. As an added bonus, it shows how to use Elements, taking the reader from the first time they install Elements through all the photo adjustments.

Dear Sammy,

Sorry: I must have sounded rather harsher than I meant. But I am sure that as an ex-teacher you must be used to people making unkind jokes at the expense of principals!

For me, 'over-working' a piece sometimes introduces more errors. There's an old saying that every piece of art (which can include writing) needs two people: the artist to create it, and someone to kill him when it's finished.

My first piece of paid writing was published in 1974 or so; when, indeed, I was a teacher. One of the most important things I've learned since, from teaching in the 70s, writing instructional material in the late 70s and early 80s, and freelance writing and photography since, is that trying to look clever is always an invitation to divine retribution.

Quite honestly, I have no recollection of any errors in your writing, and if I saw any, I'd simply assume that things are exactly as you say: life isn't long enough to polish and re-polish everything.

Cheers,

R.

Roger,

I think we better understand each other's point of view. Thanks for your kind post. I think I made a friend. I will remember your saying about needing two people to finish a piece. It would be true in my case. Thanks again. Sammy

Shouldn't grammar, spelling, sentence structure, organization of ideas and verb agreement all come automatically, with that background?

Of course, I could be REALLY nasty (as another ex-teacher) and say that, well, you don't expect much from principals.

Seriously, we all make mistakes, and there's no sense in getting too excited about them, but many of us have our 'hot buttons'. Mine include comparison of 'unique' (either something is one of a kind, or it isn't, so you can't have 'fairly unique' or 'very unique') and the substitution of "As much as I like" for "Much as I like..."

Of course, English evolves and changes (and even turns into American), but equally, there's a case to be made for acting as a brake on changes that add nothing to the language and irritate those who love it.

Cheers,

R.

Mr. Roger,

I totally agree with everything you've said. I did make errors in my comments. However, when I was a teacher and principal, as you know, I had to be very, very careful with my writing by making several drafts, revisions, and proofreading corrections. Parent newsletters, letters to other administrators, memos to teachers had to be as perfect in all aspects of written language. I no longer am in that role and can now write with a "flow of ideas" to express myself.

In addition, some people are not educated in language arts or may have difficulty with spelling due to any number of reasons. To be less "strict" about English rules of grammar, spelling, etc. is appropriate for the audience of the photography forum.

What I do know about written expression is on a high level, but what I know about photography would give me straight F's. While teaching, I was a stickler for correct written expression from both students and teachers. Poor writing would be embarassing. It would give the public another reason to disrespect public educators.

Here, my purpose is different. I want to learn the ABCs of photography. Being a teacher yourself, I completely understand from where you are coming.

In addition, you should know that error free writing does not come "automatically" to me. It took practice, practice, practice as does photography. Writing still requires rereading, editing, revising as does photography. I don't care to take the time to do that here. Please excuse any errors you may find in this post. Please help me with any questions I may have regarding equipment or photos posted on this forum. I'm a Kindergarten photographer!

From Sammy

The terms "grey market," "direct import," and "IMP," refer to the same thing in this article.
B&H sells most products with a warranty from the manufacturer or from the manufacturer's licensed importer. We also sell some products we've obtained from sources other than the manufacturer or its licensed importer. These are "grey market" products.

"Grey market" is not illegal, not factory seconds, not demo merchandise, not cheaper or inferior products. In fact in almost every instance a "grey market" products is absolutely identical to its US-warranted counterpart. "Grey market" and US-warranted products are manufactured in the same factories from the same components, and sub-assemblies, to the same specs and tolerances, by the same workers. In terms of the item itself there is no difference at all. A "grey market" Nikon 50mm f/1.4 D-AF lens (for example) is exactly the same in every possible way as the US-warranted version.

What are the differences as far as a customer is concerned?
In most cases the difference between a "USA" and a "Grey Market," or imported product, is the cost of the item and the terms of the item’s warranty coverage. The products themselves are otherwise identical. As a rule, "Grey Market" items cost less than their USA counterparts. "Grey market" products never qualify for manufacturer's rebate programs.

Has anyone with a gray market camera ever taken it to be repaired at a place in the states? If so, what happened?

It also keeps me from getting food caught in my chest hair

You shoot such a variety of "personalities." What amazes me is that you capture the physical as well as the emotions and personality of each subject. Your work is so much more than visual art. Bravo!

(My only suggestion is to change your scary avatar so I can relax before my photo is taken!)
