My 56 wasn't as pretty. But then I bought for $125 and sold it at the end of the summer for $100.

It was 3 speed column. I think it had the straight 6.

Painted it myself. Wasn't bad although not a professional grade. Buyer liked it.

Real. Oxpeckers land on all places on all animals in Africa.

Some tout their service in eating pests but they also break the skin.

The worst lens I own. Just not sharp. I much prefer using my 24-70 f2.8. Heavy lens, but super sharp.

Methinks you are dealing with the problem behind the viewfinder. All testers and users love the 24-200.

I suppose you might have a defective one. Send it to Nikon to see.

Has anyone used this lens? I'm 80 years old and my newest camera is the Nikon z50...trying to keep everything lightweight. I have both kit lenses which comes with this camera, but I really prefer an all-in-one lens. I take photos of family and travel. This looks like a good buy on Nikon's refurbished sale. It was $899.95 and is now $599.95.... but I don't know anything about it. I would appreciate any advice.

It is mostly glued to my Z72. That is a great buy and I have been completely satisfied with Nikon refurbs.

Excellent lens but it is FX and thus large and heavy for Z50. I never use it on my Z50. You might consider the DX 18-120 or 140.

I have the 200-500 and love it for reach and image quality. I use my Z50 mostly with it reducing total weight even with FTZ. The DX image area in effect adds a 1.5 TC with no loss of min fstop and of course free because I have the Z50 for other purposes (mostly when hiking).

If Nikon ever issues the Z 200-600 that has been on their map for years I’ll consider it. But likely they will price it to not interest me.

I am considering a 100-400 for when I want to venture further for less weight. Nikon has priced theirs beyond my level of interest so I might go with Tamron or Sigma. They require FTZ also so weight reduction would be only the lens difference. And I’d most use it on the Z50 as well because I have the 24-200 on my Z72.

I seem to be a youngster here…only 75 till next month.

A good reason to adopt the routine of setting the camera to take three shots with each release. Another reason is often one is sharper.

Thank you all for the helpful comments. I now have a new plan with flash that will work.

I did read the Thom Hogan article pointed to above. He disses the SB 700 for use with Nikon Zs. I see no issues with that. It works fine.

Read your manuals. My SB800 won't do TTL at iso over 1000 and the shutter sync is 250..unless set to Hi speed.

The TTL exposure with the SB700 used ISO over 10,000. The subject exposure was good but noisy because of that high an ISO.

One thing I did notice that puzzeled me was how fast the flash recharged and was ready. Now I know why: because of the high ISO and TTL the flash must have used low power.

Lightroom adjustments helped but didn’t fix. I need to go to my other computer to use Topaz Denoise. It will make them acceptable at least for use on small screens.

When I went into menu to adjust the max for auto ISO I found there is an additional setting for “Max ISO with flash” on my Z72. Don’t recall that on my Nikon DSLRs. I checked my Z50. I found it also has “max ISO with flash”.

Anyway that allows using auto ISO with flash. Done deal!

Thanks again for the ideas.

PS: using M to set both shutter speed and aperture.

I didn’t pay attention to shutter speed thinking it doesn’t matter with flash. It certainly does matter for the background exposure. I think I used aperture setting to get the DOF I wanted. That part worked fine.

So it might be better when using flash to use M and set the shutter speed, aperture, and ISO trusting the flash for exposure of the subject. My concern is that the numbers I’d choose first will be too dark for background: 1/200 s, f7, ISO 400. I’ll try that.

That worked fine. TTL flash compensated. ISO 200 also fine.

Fine, stay with auto iso, just shoot in shutter priority at less than you max. speed for flash, for most newer camera's, it's probably 1/250 sec. to 1/400 sec.
Always check your manual for your maximum speed.
Actually, I like to drag my shutter when using flash, I like to have the background as bright as my subjects.
I usually shoot at 1/30 sec.
Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

Thanks for the ideas. I will reset my max ISO on auto. I’m not sure the Nikon Z72 includes ISO in the user settings but will check. My U1 is for Landscape, U2 for wildlife, and U3 for “whatever”. I’ll check into making U3 for flash.

As I noted in initial post Nikon doesn’t fix ISO when using flash.

I find that Auto ISO is useful provided that a limit is set on how high it can go. That limit for me( using my Panasonic M4/3 G80 16mpx) is an ISO of 1600. This has proved to be sufficient latitude for most of my photography. If something higher could be needed then I prefer to make a decision at the time, with WB etc to consider.
Happy New Year everybody.

That is another alternative for my problem described in my recent post about auto ISO and flash. My learning was that the camera sets the ISO before the flash and without recognizing it. I'll probably just turn off auto ISO when using flash but I can also reset my limit on auto ISO.

Just recently I started to allow myself to go beyond comparative film speed limits and I'm finally starting to see what is possible far north of ISO 100... or in reality 800... especially with partial fill flash and ambient light portraiture.

My lack of trust with new sensor technology has been unfounded. I look back at images from a decade ago and find myself wondering why shutter speed was at such a cliff hanging slow setting at times... but there is little noise, aside from motion blur.

My "fear of noise" will disappear with more therapy, especially now that I am seeing greater results. Auto- ISO is a new friend and I am overcoming my fears...

I wonder if younger photographers not exposed to "old technology" limits are having greater success today. Its amazing how far noise control has advance both "in camera" and with editing software.
