What is the location where you took these shots

I love taking photos of Eagles but don't have any current ones to post

These were taken at Lock and Dam 15 in Davenport, Iowa on the Mississippi River.

Some shots from L&D 15.
1) right at capture time

2) eagle in so close I could not get entire eagle in frame. Shooting at 700 mm. Notice the “chin hairs”.

3)Juvenile chasing and hoping to get the fish the adult has tucked away in talons.

Thanks for your input, Mi! I also wondered if there just wasn't enough contrast for the camera to pick up the eagle. I've never used that wide of a focus area, as I'm always concerned the camera will choose to focus on something other than my subject. It would work well against the sky, but once there's anything in the background, I think it'll be a challenge. Have you had success using the wider zone with a busier background?

I have had good luck with that unless they are right up against whatever makes up the background. When they fly over open water with trees in background but not real close it has been no problem. I took the liberty of posting an example.

Nice photos! We stopped there last February on our way to Florida and froze my butt off. I did get a few shots but none as good as yours. It’s certainly a nice place to photograph from.

Thank you

I may be wrong but I feel trying to focus on a bald eagle from a long ways away is tough for the camera. The eagle is predominantly dark so it is hard to grasp the contrast it needs. When in flight I usually use a zone focus area and try to keep the eagle “in the box”. I use the focus area right after the 9 point focus point. Easier to focus on the eagle flying especially if against the sky.
