I was taking a short cut over the Wet mountains in southern Colorado and just happened to glance to my left. I took a couple of quick shots. When I got home I measured the distance to the edge of the mountain range in the background of this photo; 54 miles. It never ceases to amaze me how clear it can be at altitude here. For my fellow Colorado folks the shortcut is between Bishops Castle and Beulah.

As a 30 year Marine I learned to always protect your equipment. Should you drop your rifle you immediately throw your body between the weapon and the ground. As expensive as are cameras and lenses are I recommend the "throw your body to the ground" method. Of course it is much easier to put a protect filter on the lens; thats what I have done.

I was learning to fly while stationed in Okinawa. As my instructor and I headed to the training area Kadena approach control called us. "Cessna970beadvisedfourF-4approachingatyourtwelvecallonsight". I never saw them but I knew that had gone by as their wash shook my poor little airplane like a puppy shaking off water. I then realized as a mud Marine I had no reason to be motoring around in the sky. BTW, while memorable, that was my last flight.

My poor little airplane shook like a wet puppy when the Phantom jets flew under me from their turbulence. At that point I realized I am a mud Marine not an aviator. BTW it was my last flight.

For many years I carried a Canon. Finally the weight got to me and I switched to Olympus. I highly recommend the mirrorless 4/3 system. You may want to rent an Oly camera at your local camera shop and see how you like it.
I know there has been a lot of talk about Olympus "going out of business". My understanding is that the corporation sold the Olympus portion of the business. The new owners are continuing the camera line and the name.

The folks at Custer County were very helpful. As the staff told me, after a period of time of non-occupancy or when a property is taken over by the local government due to things such as failure to pay taxes or when improvement to roadways is required. The property in the picture became property of the county due to non-occupancy. They were not able to identify neighboring property.
I think I'll jump the fence and get some close ups. Maybe in B&W.
