jokescache1: The new Pentax's are prety nice, too. The one thing I liked about them is that one of the models had an eight minute bulb setting, I'm not sure how it is done, but it's a terrific setting for meteor showers, or any deep sky objects in a telescope with a equatorial drive that moves the scope with the sky objects. Even longer lightning exposures, which would allow the background, such as a town or city to come through, if you wanted.

DON'T TEASE;;; if your telling true,,WHAT MODEL????? I want a better[durned fixed income]model Dslr, but I gave up checking new stuff, quite awhile back..have to hoard my pennies and save my tax return allowance for a bit, to upgrade.--joe

jokescache1: The darn thing that I think you're talking about that could be damaged by too much exposure to light is the sensor. You wouldn't use the bulb setting if you had a lot of light - it's usually used for walk-around multiflash or astronomical or lightning photos, where there would be that much light to begin with! Help this helps!

thanks Dryart;; can't say yea/nay or what the yell..I am only familiar with my pentax--and a bit about canon[my daughters camera]..my manual has no ref. for bulb and she takes mutiple timed pics to put together a star trail[I'll have check out the nikkon{you got any other recommendations??} to see what is possible..--joe

I'm old, but I'm not filmy. Nikon D700 manual, pp. 73 describes using the main command dial while in manual mode to select the bulb shutter setting.

sorry bout that rag;;said in my first post--don't know anything about nikon,,if you say it does GOOD...let us see how a star trails pic comes out,,after! a couple hours exposure... also without a special program putting together multiple pics[my daughter has one of those--her star trails aren't bad.].---joe

It's the "whatchamacallit" and the "doomaflitchie". Anyway, any truth to story about "long exposures" potentially damaging the CCD or CMOS ? ( http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/cameras-photography/digital/question362.htm )

all I am sure of is that I "heard that continual exposier from an open shutter would damage the dumaflatche[lol]..you could program multi exposiers on a time schedule to use a program to join thogether for star trails..if you tried to keep the shutter open for to long,,==damage..---joe

jokescache1: The DSLR's do have a bulb setting, but you probably have to buy the optional remote control to use it - I don't know if the DSLR's have a threaded screw mount for a shutter release - therefore it must be wireless - I don't own a DSLR myself, but I've read some of the reviews. I hope a DSLR is in my future sometime - my budget is very tight! Right now, I own a Fuji Megazoom 18x!

right now,I'm limited to a pentax x-70 24x mega..its a few[couple?]years old..
I think what you are refering to is only the shutter release..from what I understand,if the shutter is opened for to long a time it willl damage the ???????[can't remember the name right now]...
its the part that takes[use to be film]the picture[all them pixels[lol]...if there is a new one that can be opened long enough[like for star trails] please PM me and let me know.THANKS---joe

Thanks to all for your encouragement. To answer a couple of questions, I like nature photography, landscape and 'artistic' as opposed to portrait. '

I don't know if anyone ever answered this question for you or not.. the best answer[don't know anything about nikons] I can give you is-,-,- set your your camera on auto--shoot pics--if you like any, save them,,if not delete like crazy..--repeat as much as needed, until you are comfortable with the camera in hand..--then and only then, start with one[1],and only one, function at a time[ISO/shutter speed/Fstop],learn what it does to the pics you are taking[more deleting]..
what everyone has told you about pics and indentifying in the manual is right..anyone talking about bulb setting are old time[me] film photogs..on digital cameras there is no such setting..
don't know if I have helped, hope so..I only know that watching the camera work in auto, might help in realizing what you will eventually learn what you will be doing with the different functions when you go manual..best of luck.---joe

The sunset is unique and quite attractive. I've shot the Bryce arch but never gotten the particular view you have. In yours it looks almost as if you are suspended above it. Nice view!

think you got me-n-heaton mixed up on the "sunset",,just wish I could get any like that.. as for my shots,,if/when I get to/through a park[or anywhere],it is just from or very close to the car..ticker and air filter don't allow me much movement.
the arch pictures were taken from the walkway above it.--joe

Well Joe I have never been to Montana. I believe thats where the cattle drive was headed in the movie Lonesome Dove. When we arrived in Texas from Chicago it was posted on the interstate "Welcome to Gods Country". It struck me as funny. I'm posting a couple photos. Thoughts?

hey mouser,,I was just joking too.. way--way,way back---
after WW2 ended,,there was a story in nat geo or some other mag, about texas using used military jeeps to herd cattle on some ranch..all the people we knew made a big joke out of
"texans being drug store cowboys[as some song says something about "riding the range in a big v8"]..
as for your pic tures--shoot-shoot--shoot..look over everything//critique,worse than you would anyone else..
when you see an error-figure out how to correct it[AT THE CAMERA IF POSSIBLE]..not by a "program" in the camera, but by being sure the tools behind the shutter/view finder, are working to their optimum.
your pics are cute, the model is as pretty as anyone would want.
check--composure[balance, in my mind is more important than
the 1/3 rule]/focus[any blur should be on purpose]/subject-very important[interest-color-shape-etc.] I don't know anything else to say,,if you don't like it [pic] most others probably wont,,be your worse critic.. the best to you--joe

I believe this is one of the lesser know of the Utah parks: therefore it is not as popular as its neighbors. It is located in Southwestern Utah between the city of George Utah and Zion National Park. It has its own spectacular beauty. Please feel free to post your images. I would appreciate your comments.
