What does everyone think about a Nikon 80-400mm for bird and wildlife photography. I have a chance to buy one for 300.00 from a relative. Has anyone had one?

I have both versions of this lens. The original version was "OK" but it sometimes "hunted" for focus and it was slow. The later version is "WOW !". Quick focus, fast VR, great clarity. If it is the newer version, jump on that great deal. First photo is the original lens. Second photo is of the newer lens. Notice the difference in outward design of the lens tripod mount.

In HD slideshow, with Joe's (joer) permission, please enjoy his collection of stunning beauty on bird photography. Joe took these "National-Geographic" caliber bird photos in the friendly confines of his "studio" (backyard). One word: Scintillating! The show is about 6 1/2 minutes long. The show will not disappoint. Satisfaction guaranteed.

I would like to thank Joe for granting permission on the slideshow program and sharing us his photos. Without further adoo, here's the link to the show:

I would like to start taking close up pictures of flowers. I mean super-close up. I have a Nikon D5500 and would like suggestions on what lens to purchase. I think I need VR and do not want to use a tripod. Manual focusing is fine. I'm thinking of purchasing the Nikon 100mm or the 90 mm Tamron with VC. Anyone have any good recommendations? Thank you!

I have the Nikkor Micro 105MM F 2.8 and absolutely love it !

Apart from price what do UHers think are the pros and cons of the Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6E ED AF-S VR Zoom NIKKOR Lens versus the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR Lens?

The Nikon 200-500 mm lens is Not weather sealed. In wet weather, the zooming of the lens barrel can suck moisture into the internal area of the lens.

The Nikon 500 MM is just that. . . 500 mm. No zoom capability. But it is weather sealed.
So, it comes down to your choice: Zoom, or just 500 mm.

Then there is the matter of weight. . . .

I found that for certain model of cameras the prices in Japan is significantly less expensive than in the US. If I buy from Japan and bring it back would Nikon USA honor the warranty or even service it for a fee?

You forgot to mention that at Customs, you will pay a fee for bringing something into The USA that was previously Undeclared !

Just bought a Nikon D500 and am looking at XQD cards.
I read that Lexar are no longer making cards and the Sony one is not very good. I've done a search but couldn't find any other manufacturers..
Are there any other "good" XQD cards available..??

I use Sony XQD Cards in my Nikon D4s and it works great ! I don't know where you got your data that Sonu cards are junk, but I'd say that is "fake news".

Hi all, hope you can help me with some suggestions and/or opinions.

I have the opportunity to buy the Nikon AF-S VR Micro-NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED Lens, used, at a very good price from what I understand (asking USD 500, probably can get it by less) at least around my country.
I have thought of this lens to give macro a try and that may also be useful as a portrait lens.

It will be used on a D7200, so not sure if the crop factor would make it too long for portraits and I have read it has some breath issues for macro.
Could you let me know what your opinions are on this lens for these uses?
For portraits should I just stick to the 50mm 1.8?
For macros should I look for another one?

I have read very good reviews from Tokina's equivalent (if you can find it in stock), and I guess that there wouldn't be much difference in cost between new Tokina and used Nikon. I could wait until June/July when I may have the chance to buy a lens on the USA. Would you suggest this?

And finally, if I go for the used Nikon lens, is there something specific I could check/try with the lens to be sure there are no issues with it? (I think that is a little cheaper than I expected and that makes me doubt).

TIA as always!

I bought this lens new from B and H. It is exceptionally sharp. I use it specifically for Macro and flowers. I couldn't be happier.

Put the objective up. If you should drop it, the objective (padding or not) won't hit the ground and be damaged by the impact.

I’m a brand spanking new digital photography baby. I’m a navy vet, disabled public health doc, electrical/biomedical engineer and aviation enthusiast who now takes photos of stupid things like my hands to get free nail polish, and I occasionally photograph important things like nature, aircraft, ... and my kids. Oh. And the cat. And the devilbird.

In my teens I did some film work with my dad’s Leica and Nikon collections. I’ve inherited my dad’s digital Nikons (d700 and d300 IIRC but they’re all packed up and I have the memory of an amnestic goldfish), and a whole bunch of lenses, but my seat-of-the-pants efforts have resulted in awful pics and I can’t seem to find the right lens to get good hand pics while looking through the damn viewfinder or at the battery sucking tiny screen.

I need to be able to shoot great macros, close up whole hand and product photos & video tutorials, and edit and post them on a budget. While I feel like I should stick w Nikon to use all the expensive lenses my dad collected, Canon is looking so much easier at first glance. I doubt anyone’s still reading but if you are, I’d treasure your advice!

Thanks!!

OK Velvet. You might want to find someone who is Honest, and Knowledgeable, and go over all your lenses and cameras. Then you may be able to figure out what's what. Switching from one brand to the next is not really a good idea at this point. You may just need to be pointed in the right direction. It certainly doesn't hurt to ask
