So I got the chance to compare the new 7D Mk II, my current 5D Mk II and a 1DX side by side... using my 70-200 f.2.8L II shooting at 5000 ISO. My 5D MK II beat out the new 7D MK II when is came to noise. Then I looked at the same shot on the 1DX... "what noise"! I now own a 1DX! I've shot 3 High School basketball games since I got it. I used to get 10 keepers out of a hundred with the 5D. With the 1DX it's 90 out of 100! What a camera!!!

Word of warning for you curious folks. Do not open up a "good" hard drive. Once you do, it's junk. Hard drives are assembled in a clean room. Any spec of dust on the spinning platter will likely cause a catastrophic failure.

The read head of a hard drive floats on a cushion of air just microns above the spinning platter surface. Think of it as a 747 flying 2 ft above the gound at 500 mph and then hitting a car (the dust particle). It causes a small gash on the magnetic material surface and likely will make the drive unusable.

I don't have a 40D, but I do have a 50D, and with the 50D I was only able to go to 1600, so 800 on the 40D sounds reasonable. If you are going to upgrade, a 7D Mk II would be a good choice if you are a sports/action photographer. If you are a landscape/portrait photographer, I'd lean more toward the full from 5D Mk II.

Thanks Guys... I did look at prices on eBay... but I made the mistake of looking at "asking" prices not the prices they sold at. So I did some recalculating and I'm dropping the price to $1500.00

I will provide a picture of everything as soon as I can... just haven't had time to set it up. (High school basketball season is keeping me hopping!).

If you are still looking for a 5D Mk II, I have one with about 25,000 shutter cycles. It would come with 5 batteries, a Vello vertical grip, and a Vello wireless trigger.

Great comments from BassmanBruce! I would also play with White Balance. Nite shots of lights can tend to be a bit warm... you might want to try moving down the Kelvin scale to bring out the colors. HDR can be a cool tool to try as well. Look forward to seeing some of your shots!

Here's a Adorama TV video from a couple of years ago with Gene Lower, photographer for the Arizona Cardinals. It will give you a feel for what the team photographer does.

Here's another about Sports Illustrated photographers.

lukan, I just spent the last 2 months agonizing on whether to up grade my 5D Mk II to the new 7D Mk II or a 1DX (I'm a sports/action shooter). I did a comparison at the local photo store between all three. I was trying really hard to justify the 7D Mk II obviously due to cost. But after taking several "identical" shots with each camera I was simply blown away at the quality of the shots produced by the 1DX over the other two. They were not even in the same ballpark! Like you, I don't shoot for a living (though I do a little sports for the local newspaper), so for me it was the same revelation. I wan't to produce the finest images I can.

I bought the 1DX. You will love it!

Stop! You guys are killing me. Every photographer knows that the better your cameras ISO/Noise performance is the better your shot will be when you "NEED" to dip into that range to get your shot. The poster was simply trying to put some photos out from a newly released camera. Draw your own conclusions about whether you think the camera lives up to all it's hype and move on. Sheesh!

I have to disagree with singleviking... Matte or glossy does change how your photos look. The human eye perceives a photo shown on a matte screen with somewhat less contrast, whereas a glossy screen seems sharper with richer color. I much prefer a glossy screen when it comes to displaying photos for editing.

That being said, glossy screens can be affected by unwanted reflection which can impede the editing process as well. If you go with a glossy screen, you need to make sure you can eliminate any sources of reflection.

Matte screens are still usable in photography as long as you understand what effect they have on human visual perception, and you make allowances for that.

It basically comes down to your personal preference based on the environment you will be using it in. If you are going to be in a brightly lit room with lots of outside light (sources of reflection) then a matte screen may be your choice. If you will be in a room where you can control the lighting, then a glossy screen may be the best choice.

Here's a link to a article outlining the advantages and disadvantages of each, maybe it will help.

I hate to say it, but I still have the 1DX in the back of my head, especially since there is a Canon $800 rebate.

I've been using onOne Software since the Suite 7.0 and I already have the Suite 9 upgrade. To my mind, it's the best out there. I could get by pretty well with just the Suite 9, without Lightroom or Photoshop CC.

If you are just doing basic photo corrections (color, exposure, sharpening, etc.) then LightRoom is all you need. But, if you want to do layereded editing, and add stylistic effects to your photos, then Perfect Photo Suite is one of the fastest, easiest to use, and capable programs you can use. I've been using it since version 6.
