It's very simple why I lean libertarian, personal freedoms and fiscal responsibility, I am more inclined to be concerned about a fiscal agenda than I am a social agenda, I agree with the libertarians that our government left its charter behind many years ago.... I don't like war and US military involvement all over the world. I don't believe our government can buy friends overseas while not adequately addressing issues at home... Basically I have lost almost all faith in the federal government, the biggest issue faced by our government is the bureaucracy that they have created and for some reason it is the only damn issue that they refuse to address... Politicians are driven by elections and popular whims. Here we are more worried about opening our borders to immigration as they say it will increase jobs at the very same time that people here in this country are suffering, unemployed or grossly underemployed... DC has lost any capacity to take a realistic view of what is ailing this country and constructively address our issues...

An old teacher of mine once told me that when any organization increases in size and complexity, enough to be considered an institution, then its one and only focus becomes preservation of said institution. I believe that we are experiencing that type of attitude from the old school politicians on both sides of the aisle. They are no longer interested in doing the work of the people, only in getting re-elected.

That part is true, but the acre of land we bought is at 4,000 ft elevation, so we above the VOG layer. We love the Big Island. Virtually every climate you could want is somewhere on the Island.
My wife and I are both into astronomy, so we are going to have a small observatory on our property.

Very nice. You will definitely be able to have some of the cleanest views of the stars on earth! When are you planning to make the move?

Welcome. Where in Hawaii? My wife and I will be retiring there in the next couple of years. We bought an acre on the Big Island about 7 years ago.

Nikon. That's what I've always shot. I, too, had and still have my old Nikkormat along with a Nikon F, F2S and all my old lenses. DSLR is all new to me.

Oahu. Haven't been to the Big Island yet. Spent a couple of weeks on Maui and loved it. I hear the Big Island is a very nice place to live but when the trades stop blowing, you can become inundated with VOG (like smog but actually caused by gases from the volcanoes).

Welcome to UHH. You live in the place I am trying to move to! Paradise! What Island do you live on?

I live on Oahu, in a town named Mililani, It's almost in the center of the Island, just south of Wahiawa. It's a bit expensive if you want to live in Honolulu but I find it quite affordable up here.

Hi everyone. I'm currently retired and living in the beautiful (and phogenic) state of Hawaii. I've been living here for just north of 6 years and wouldn't want to live anywhere else. I was born in Philadelphia, PA but was severely stricken with a case of wanderlust at the tender age of 17. It's been a wonderful trip! My very first camera was a Nikkormat FTn that I purchased while stationed in Okinawa in 1971. Since I was on a tropical island, what better to photograph than macros of the flora and telephotos of the landscape? Those are the two areas that I still enjoy today.
I ended up spending 20 years in the Air Force and then retired and went to work for an international robotics company. That allowed me to continue my travels but unfortunately my photography dropped by the wayside. I had to take a medical retirement and that allowed me to move to Hawaii. I am getting back into photography and now have a Nikon D5200 with the 18mm - 55mm kit lens.
I am looking forward to learning many new skills (and re-learning many old skills) from all of the knowledgeable folks here. Thanks for taking the time to read this.
