Jerry, when cutting 45s, quite often your piece will want to travel away from the blade. That's why you should use a clamping system to hold the piece in place. It only takes maybe 1° to mess up the corner.
What will you be using to cut your word with ?
When ever I would male up a new design, I would always save about a 6 inch piece to use as a pattern for the next time. Makes it so much easier.
Several lumber stores that handle molding Will usually have short pieces to choose from that you can take home at no cost.. Most of the lumber companies that I drove truck for carry these short pieces, try to get a sample of each, drill each one then run a wire or twine through them to keep them all toh ether.
