Where do you live? That would help me figure out if he's fishing for himself or for a family at this point. And whether he's om his way back somewhere. I live at 9,500' in Colorado and our bald (assuming you're talking about a bald?) eagles all returned in Jan/Feb and are now raising their young chicks.

Thanks for the suggestion about the Lumix - I'll check it out.

Thanks for your thoughtful response. I DO like the IQ from the Canon. I take a lot of wildlife shots, as I'm a volunteer for Colorado Parks and Wildlife, so the longest zoom with good quality is important, so that I don't get too close to the critters, and I use the zoom for ID purposes for raptors. I've been happy with the Canon's IQ for my purposes, which is why I'm thinking about another Canon down the line. I bought the P900, but the IQ wasn't satisfactory for me at the time. I have two Nikons (D3100 and D7200) and the Tamron 150-600, but I still like the 1365mm that the Canon gives me.

I did have a 3-year policy, but am outside of that now. The SX60 lens scratch is now causing a 'flare' in sunlight - which we have a lot of in Colorado. So a new one is in the offing. I DO get a 3-year policy on all my new equipment, since my husband and I run a Jeep club and we're frequently bumping around on mining roads above treeline. And yes, I AM hard on my equipment...and - as I've heard someone else say - I've occasionally been victimized by my own 'natural grace'

Howdy Hogs - My Canon SX60 has been dropped several times, the lens scratched by a rock when I slipped into a creek (lens cap actually hit the rock JUST right and came off), and most recently got driven over by a Jeep Rubicon - twice. The dang thing still works! But I'm thinking it's time for a new one. I know the SX70 has appeared, but with not a lot of upgrades from the SX60. Since Nikon has come out with the P900 (83x zoom) AND the P1000 (125x zoom), I'm wondering if anyone has heard of any new Canon SX's coming out with longer zoom ranges within the next 6-12 months? Thanks for any info (or rumors :-) )

Wonderful images! I appreciate you posting, as I watch raptors for CO Parks and Wildlife. These guys are a bit hard to find. I never realized the YOY had so well-developed colors and patterns. So much like their parents!

Fabulous! Glad you shared it with us. Now I don't have to take a stroll at 2 a.m. with coyotes and grizzlies sniffing around 😁

A great thing to do is go to a couple of the photography shops in town and talk to the owners. They're usually pretty good about sharing ideas. My two favorites are "Alpenglow Images and Accents" (Richard Hahn) and "Images of RMNP" (Erik Stensland). Erik sells a small book with photography tips, ideas and locations for scenic shots in the park. Check out Alberta Falls and Adams Falls. Chasm Falls is about 100 feet off of Old Fall River Road (the gravel, but car-doable) road from the EndoValley picnic area, up to the top of the Alpine Visitor Center. Elkfest is September 28 - 29 in Estes Park, so expect company! Our favorite place to eat is Smokin' Dave's BBQ and for a treat, the Dunraven Inn. Also, take the drive down Devil's Gulch to Glen Haven and visit the general store. As you drive out of EP, be sure to look back at the mountains through the rearview mirror and stop and take pics from that vantage point. From Glen Haven continue on to Drake, then back up to EP. Have fun! (I live 80 miles from RMNP and go up often.)

Love this photo! I'm fascinated by geological formations. If you don't mind, where is this located? Is it around Grand Junction?

Wow! Beautiful! What camera, lens, and settings? I'm still learning how to "shoot (for) the moon". Any info helps. Thanks!

For restaurants, try the Blue Pig (BBQ) on the southern end of town and the Sunset Grill on the hill north of Moab. Very interesting history of the use of radium in the early 1900's. Potash Road has a "Thelma and Louise" point, where they drive their car off the cliff at the end of the movie. Be careful of 4-wheel drive roads, as many of them are very sandy and if there's any rain (probably not likely), they become very slick. We also loved the Kane Creek Road (paved to a point) drive...beautiful scenery (along the river) and some cool petroglyphs (look for Birthing Rock). Be sure to stop at the Visitor/Information Center in town...very good maps and helpful advice from locals. Also, go to the TomTill Photo Gallery in town. He has some awesome shots that may serve as inspiration for you. When you go to the Nat'l Parks, go as early or late as is practical, due to heat waves and fewer people in your photos (by June, families will be there on summer vacation and kids are running and climbing everywhere!) Also, when you go to Fischer Towers (north on Rt. 128), you can also drive the Onion Creek road just south of the towers. My husband and I run a Jeep Club...will be there the end of April with the group (before it gets too hot). Have a great trip. You WILL be back - too much to see in just one trip!

Thanks for the info. I'll check out the hotel. The only other recommendation I got was for the Bryce Motel outside the park. PS - I live at 9,500', so I'm prepared for the cold 😁

I want to photograph Bryce in winter (Bryce on Ice). Do any of you local photographers have any hints on how to make the most out of a winter trip there? I do have flexibility in scheduling from Jan-April. What weather indicators should I watch? I'm thinking I'd watch the snowstorms and try to get there BEFORE the snow flies, so I'll be there after the storm. Any ideas as to best month - in general? Jan, Feb or March? Any ideas, hints or tips will be appreciated so I can make the trip the best possible. Thanks for your time!
