Nice day out, no wind about 75 degrees.
Nikon D4 paired with a 200-500 5.6.
A few shots taken with a D500 paired with a 80-400 but still I am not happy with the focus at 400mm, so I don't use it much. The lens is perfect on the D4. Go figure.

Hi Gang:
Sorry for the delay on being on here but been super busy shooting softball and baseball.
These shots were taken with a Nikon D4 paired with my trusty 200-500 5.6 lens.

Auto white balance
Auto iso (usually around 500-1000)
Nice sunny day with no clouds.

I’d like to ask which of these photos would a sports publication prefer? This is Caitlin Clark launching a 3 point shot. Hopefully, Jules will weigh in.
These were taken from the bleachers with a Sony RX 10 IV so they aren’t the quality I could get with a better camera and lens but I can’t take anything better in.

I like the third shot the best. Your hands are kind of tied being in the stands. Close to the game is ideal but you did well anyway. Good stuff.

Thank you everyone for the suggestions and all.

Constructive criticism and feedback is how we learn so I’m always open to them.

Now we're talking John. Nice and close, see the face, the ball. Great stuff. Let that action come to you.

Indoor football game 2 under my belt. I'm finding the biggest challenge is learning my way around the arena! Most shot at Nikon Z9, 70-200 f2.8 Z, 1/1000, ISO 4000, f3.5, but individual details may be viewed in the photo captions. Even broke out the backup Z6 for the "in close" shots. Fun getting out to photograph this sport again!

The last shot is my favorite, although there all very good. Me I would try going to 1/1600 or 1/2000 at wide open. Those Z cameras can handle the higher iso. Just my opinion for whatever it's worth.

I used the Nikon D500 with a 80-400 but at 400mm lost focus. I re-calibrated the lens with the camera yesterday and will try this combo today again. Hope it's better. Great combo for plays at second base or home. Something isn't right. Any suggestions will be helpful.

Thanks to all who commented on the shots. Really appreciate it.

Love them all. You are the best. I want to go and get shooting again. The weather is wet (rain) and cold 30's. This old guy has enough problems without these. Thanks BE SAFE!!

Tom

I do understand. Try to have the players coming at you to fill the frame. When your ready for a 2.8 always consider used. All the lenses are bought used.
Good luck rangerjohn.

I haven’t shot outside sports in years.
Last week I was asked to shoot the girls soccer games so I gave it a shot.

Nikon Z7ii w/Nikon Z100-400 4.5-5.6
Most shots were around 1/1000-1/1250

I found the stadium lights to be pretty weak for photography, so ended up with a higher ISO and slower shutter than I like towards the end.

Suggestions although you didn't ask for them. Shoot tight and fill the frame. You would need a 2.8 lens to shoot at night under the best lighting. The closer shots are good.

I kind of experiment a bit to see what gets me results I like. I normally shot in manual mode - everything. Shutter, ISO, f-stop. Then found I was making adjustments for lighting in post processing that were taking up more time. So now I am experimenting in shutter priority. However, in this arena, the lighting is pretty good and quite even, so I may go back to manual the next outing.

Always looking for the best settings in each spot. Trouble is remembering them! LOL.

Still good work.

Regular season Marksmen season in the home stretch. A playoff spot has been secured, from here on out determines just which one. A few images from the Saturday March 16th game.

Shot with a Nikon Z9 and Tamron 35-150 f2.2-2.8 at 1/1000th, f3.2, ISO 2500.

Second shot should be framed.

Have you tried shooting in manual instead of shutter mode? Auto iso 1/1250 wide open. Just a thought.

After a five year hiatus, I now have an opportunity to photograph indoor football. Lots of fast action and scoring. No punting, no taking a knee and the clock runs most of the games. To top it off - no breaking for commercials! Biggest regret - home team players but for the quarterback all have dark visors! Almost impossible to catch their eyes! Which is also why they wear them! Unfortunately, home team lost

Shot with a Z9 fitted with a Nikon Z f2.8 70-200. Settings at shutter priority of 1/1000th, ISO and aperture calculated by camera. ISO 4000 and aperture 3.2.4.0
