I shoot in local cemeteries a bit....as someone said above, the early morning/late afternoon light is best but not absolutely vital. I usually shoot in monochrome settings and use the light and shadows to create the drama and impact of the shots. Color is okay as well, just depends on what you're trying to capture in the scene. I do envy you....New Orleans is great and their cemeteries are the best! Have fun..

I know that a lens with f1.8 or f2.8 is faster and better for low light situations. When taking pictures of multiple subjects, 3 people or so. I use a smaller aperture to increase my depth of field. When using the smaller aperture do I still have the faster and low light advantage of the lens? The picture attached was taken in a shaded area using my D7000, Tamron 18-70mm f2.8. I was using aperture priority with f5.6, 1/1600 sec, ISO at 500 and 40mm. I used a fill flash. I would have liked for the background on the picture to have been more blurred but the picture is okay. I also used this same camera and lens at a kindergarten thur 3 grade awards day in a gym. I never did find the good setting for this room. The light was bad and most of the background was a dark curtain and kids running every where. I was also using aperture priority but the pictures are really bad. Almost embarrassed to post one. Just need to understand the capabilities of the lens better.

The first came out pretty well actually. I would have used a slower shutter speed 1/125 to 1/200 and probably the ISO to 100. The indoor shot isn't really too bad.....it's just a difficult thing to shoot in that situation where you can't use a bunch of flash ......

Well, it depends on the camera you have and what settings are available. Are you going to be shooting planes in flight or on the ground? If you are shooting planes fairly close and during flybys, use at least 1/750 shutter speed. A polarizing circular filter will help to make the sky nice and deep blue. These work best at a 90 deg angle from the sun's path. Also, if you have a Canon dslr, (sorry that's what I have and the only make that I know the settings for...) use the Shutter Priority setting which is marked Tv on the selector dial. This will automatically keep your shutter speed the same and adjust the appeture to compensate for the light amount. You will also want to have your ISO setting at least set at 200 and probably 400, just depends on how much sunlight is available, the lower it's set the less noise you will have in your images. For a Canon, set your AF (auto focus) to AI Servo on your menu settings. This is used for shooting moving objects. You will also want to use your view finder and keep the plane(s) as centered as possible while following them along and shooting a few shots at a time. You can also use the Continuous Shooting mode and hold the shutter button down as you follow the plane(s). Hope this helps!

Ok Folks, I've always wondered about some of the more inexpensive telephoto lenses on the market. I had the opertunity to try one out. Here is the results: I mounted a Bower 500mm fixed lens with a 2x extender on my Nikon D5100. I mounted on a tripod and used a remote shutter release so as to eliminate any chance of camera movement. I took a few shots of the full moon night before last. The 1st photo is with that set up.
Then I removed that lens and mounted my Nikkor 55-300mm af vr lens back on my D5100. I shot the 2nd photo with that lens hand held. Then I cropped it up to the size of the 1st shot with the fixed 1000mm. The quality and sharpness stayed until I blew it up several times the size of the 1st shot. I'll let you judge for yourselves.
I think I just Proved that you usually get what you pay for in a lens! The fixed lens with extender was $150. The Nikkor was $260 both from e-bay.

2nd is way better, better contrast clarity, etc.
