He means his camera can be set for meta-data and anti-shake manually for lenses from 8mm to 1000mm. I have Pentax cameras too. The "works" are in the bodies not the lenses (like Canon or Nikon). The Pentax lenses before the A-series have no electrical contacts, i.e., M- K- and M42 Screw Mount.

You're right, that's what I meant. Since this was my first manual lens I had never been asked that by the camera before and was unsure of how to respond correctly. This has been a very interesting learning experience for me and you folks have been so helpful. I do thank you all.

Correct.

The only reason I can be sure about this is that I still have a 50mm f/2 Pentax-M lens from my first SLR, a Pentax ME that I bought in 1979 and sat in my closet until I recently bought a used-like-new K30, and that is the procedure I used getting the M-lens to work on the K-30.

Thank you so much. I think I shall check out the local pawnshops and see if I can find any new lenses to play with.

OK, so you have a KA mount; if you had an original K-mount, you would have had to follow the funky instructions given by digit-up, because the original K-mount lacks the ability to communicate at all with a camera.

I see. Now if I picked up an older lens with a K mount I would then follow the instructions given by digit-up, right.

digit-up has more experience with recent Pentax cameras than I do, so I forgot to mention that setting. He is referring to a setting with a funky-name that (if I understand correctly) gives the camera permission to take a picture even though it can't detect/recognize the lens mounted on it. Without checking that box, my K-30 just sits there, refusing to do anything useful, when I press the shutter button.

My k3 did the same thing until I read in the instruction booklet to set the aperture ring to A. Once I did that it worked fine. This has been a fun learning experience.

Hopefully the OP understands now; to remove your confusion, please read the explanations given. (that is input into the body, just as OP could also choose ISO)

Thank you, it has been made clear. I do so appreciate the help.
thanks again.

I have a K-01 as well as a K-5. They both behave the same way whenever I put a Manual lense of any type on them. With the camera in the "manual Mode" zip through the "Menu to the "using aperture ring" Set to "permitted" It's the only way you are allowed to shoot a manual lense on your Pentax. Then, when you turn your camera "on" it senses that you are using a manual lense , and then wants you to pick a range in MM. It will usually display it's lowest number(mm) when first turned on. You should toggle , up or down to see and select the nearest mm range of the lense you have on the camera. At least, that's similar to how it works on my K-5 and my K-01. Good luck. I'm pretty sure that you should select The " manual " M mode when using a Manual lense

Thank you. After reading the instructions that came with the lens and the camera manual I was able to get everything working. I didn't have to do anything with the aperture ring, I just set the aperture with the wheels on the camera. I will see if permitting makes any difference. It was mentioned as an option in the manual.

I am not familiar with Pentax but I know that in the past they had very good quality. Some of the latest bodies from what I have read are terrific and the lenses have always been of good quality.
The electronics in the camera need to know the focal length of the lens in use if there is no electronic communication between lens and camera, the case of your Rokinon. This way the camera can recognize the focal length in use and proceed accordingly as if it was using an electronic lens.
It has been said, do not lie to your camera.

I think one of us is confused... How can an 8mm fish-eye lens go all the way to 1000? Are you meaning 2 different lenses?

No, only one lens. I was just offered a large range of Focal Lengths to choose from , from 8mm to 1000mm. I understand now the camera just needed to know what lens I was using.

Pentax cameras have in-body "Shake Resistance" (image stabilization), which is adjusted based on focal-length. If it can't recognize the lens (i.e., it's not a modern automated lens), it asks for your help, so you should set it for 0008.

Thank you.

I have just received a Rokinon 8mm fisheye lens and have been trying to learn as much about it as I can. It's my first manual lens and I am not sure why, when I turn on the K3 it asks me what focal length I want. It's an 8mm fish eye so wouldn't 8mm be what I should use? It goes all the way to 1000mm. It came too late today to go out and test it much, other than to make sure the camera could see it so I have not been able to do any testing yet. Is there a point to choosing another focal size? Not sure why the question comes up whenever I turn on the camera. any information would be appreciated. Thank you.

Some printer requires that the entire image to be loaded in its memory before printing. In such a printer the size of the built in memory would limit paper length. But I think the OP talking about inkjet printer which can stop midway and wait for more data.

Yes, I was hoping for a way to make my Canon 13x 19 do longer prints. I shall try QIMAGE and see what happens.
Thank you all so much for the help and information.

Am I smelling panorama? Or a party banner?

Actually, silk scarves. And this week I had to have two 12 x 36" photos printed for a gallery show and it would have been nice to be able to have done them at home.

Use Qimage Ultimate for printing. With many printers it will bypass the print length limitation. However, there is no guarantee it will work, and even if you could, you might have paper alignment issues. Better off getting a printer that natively supports roll feed.

I will try QImage. I only need that size once in a while and being able to print at home would be nice.
Thank you,
