Annette, I cannot find the exact bench, but I remember a bench you posted. It was on the bank of a river or lake, I think. And it was about the time when this leg of the journey was just beginning. Your words and the picture inspired this poem. I believe you said you framed it along with the picture of that bench. I'll have to send you a Maine bench to go with it.
The Bench
I am here; Im immovable.
I am here, always pointed toward the best view. Someone sat here a few months ago.
I shared my view with them,
I was here feeling important and useful as their eyes
lingered on our view.
I am here, Im immovable.
I am here and sometimes I am lonely.
Seems I am the best seat only a few months
of the year.
But the view is always there waiting to be enjoyed.
I was here when the few braved this weather - and hurried by.
I am here; Im immovable.
I am here; many local dogs know it and make yellow snow
beneath my legs.
Just a few months ago, someone sat on me; I was crushed by the weight of their burden, But I was here to bear it with them.
I am here; I am immovable.
I am getting used to long stretches of lonely.
It seems like just yesterday a young couple sat Entwined around each other not caring about the view. I blushed, but I was here to feel the love between them.
I am here; I am immovable.
Im here! I want to shout. Dont you see me?
The runner continued on,
The Mommy pushed the stroller past,
The skateboarder flew by almost leaving his pants behind
but I was here and would have caught them.
I am here; I am immovable.
Im here and someone approaches.
They just sprayed something on my back! How could they do that?
They didnt care about the view or me. But I was here, and I took it.
I am here; I am immovable.
Im here and I am waiting.
Here comes someone; they shook their head
at my back and moved on.
But wait! I hear shuffling feet,
I feel someone sit gratefully in my lap. I hear his labored breathing. I feel his body sink deeper into my lap.
Soon he falls asleep in my sunfilled arms.
I was here to hold and enfold him.
I am here; I am immovable!
I am Annette.
Annette, I cannot find the exact bench, but I reme... (
