Additional Applause Approved (triple A rating! ;) ) for a great picture. Nice use of PE's 'cracked' effect.

I have always felt he could have put her in a better setting. I know the one behind her has a tale to tell, but as beautiful and enigmatic as he made her, I just feel she deserves velvets and riches, maybe a hound or a lapdog at her beck and call. Even an idyllic outdoor setting could have been behind her, but just like our photography, that would have changed the whole impact of the subject and the painting overall, so who are we to second guess the masters, eh??

I don't think there are many photographers who could do the same with a real lady and settings...not without Photoshop anyway!!! :)
I have always felt he could have put her in a bett... (show quote)

I agree. The background is another painting (probably a well thought of, Bad Painting, for it's time), and LD's critique/humor fixed it with a prettier subject over it. Like a layer in PS, the young lady is posing in front of it. How else do you explain the DOF, and the ridiculous background?

Yesterday after church I asked my wife if she wanted to head out to the beach with the kids.

"How's the weather look?", she asked...I looked into it and noticed what looked to be a strong system coming across the lake right at us (Traverse City).
I said,"yeah, probably not a good day for the beach, but I bet I could get some awesome storm photos."
"Go for it, I'll watch the kids."
Hmmm, I thought, but I was just out there the night before in Glen Arbor, and didn't get home until late last night. "Nahh, I think I'll pass and hang out here with you guys."

Good thing I did. I likely would have been trapped in a remote area without cell service, as after the storm (and tornado) ripped through, there are was impassable both in and out of the city.

Here's the news reports after the storm. The photos of the system have been amazing to see. In some photos, it looked like a hand coming out of the sky to rip up the earth.

Hey Doc,

Thanks for the ID. I'll keep an eye out for her boyfriend.

I see by the map at http://www.odonatacentral.org/index.php/FieldGuideAction.get/id/47452 they are widely distributed. I usually lookup the ID right away, but I knew if I posted the pic, someone would tell me.

It is nice when you find one that'll sit still for you. ;)

I love the intensity of the colors in the background. Nice detail in the download. I shoot dragons for the county survey so I need the true colors for ID but I may have to give this a try. Nice work.

Doc,

This guy is really small. Maybe a smidge over an inch long, the broken Hibiscus twig he is on is 1/8" thick at his feet, (Knot below is 1/4" ) . He is in our garden about 16" to 18" above the ground in the noon sun. Camera was supported with a monopod.

When I first spotted him I thought he was blue, I was seeing blue highlights on him. The pic reviews were showing yellow and green. Nose was metallic blue but would change to dark when flashed. I guess the sky's reflection was being flashed out and truer colors revealed.

We had been disappointed by our printers outputs lately (economic WF Epson 4-ink printer) as it seemed to wash away the colors we enjoyed seeing on the monitor so I was bumping up the color levels and saturation to make better prints. When I pumped up this guy (with a random custom preset), it was just really cool, overcooked, but de-"Light"-full delicious. Our prints are not quite as vivid, but they really pop.

Glad you like it. Thanks for chiming in.

Let's see, likes Hot Rods and take pictures of Thistles, and his name is Earl. Nothing goofy about that. (Me too) 8-)

these bent pieces of plastic solved a lot of the problems with specular highlights for me.

Tig,

Upon further review, It was still me, not my PP edits. What little information that is available in the white spots won't reveal itself (PP) in a way that makes the pictures any better. Time to try more "Diffusers".

That Nikon "Spacecraft" of yours really "highlights" your obsession with getting your highlights right. Looks like a handful. ;-)

I'll get on it!

Thanks for sharing.

You might consider a little more diffusion on those SB200 heads.
aint that 810 res good stuff?

Thanks for the honest constructive criticism. I often hear that same critique from the Real Photographer in the family. My ears and my eyes must be going south at the same time.

"It's me, not the camera. . ." :|

I looked back at the original NEFs and I can see that I may have added a little too much Exposure and/or Contrast. I'll see if I can remedy the blown out whites and repost.

Closeups to Zoom on. The Large Tiff files are really impressive but due to upload times these are reduced Jpegs.

The Nikon D 810 paired with the 105mm F2.8 Lens and the SB200 flashes. Super Sweet!

This is the modern way to collect Butterflies.
