The gold paint makes me think it is a polarization effect similar to using polarized sunglasses to filter out surface reflections on water.

Just some related thoughts. Metallic paints have a clear lacquer base so they can be transparent under some conditions. Light reflecting from most surfaces is polarized. Metallic surfaces generally do not polarize light.

I would experiment with lighting angle and maybe even camera rotation or a circular polarizer.

Polarization is a weird quantum effect. You would think that if reflected light is polarized by a surface and then more light is removed by the sensor or a second polarizer, that the cross polarized light is irretrievably lost. But adding a THIRD polarizer can bring back light intensity.

Anyway I don't suggest that adding filters is what you want to do to solve your problem. It is just an interesting thought.

One of the joys - and banes - of any hobby is the accessories. It's joy when an accessory is just that, something you decide to buy because it would be nice to have. In the bane category, we have "accessories" that are more or less required.

I hesitated to click on a video last night promising to show "essential" accessories that photographers should have, for under $100 each. As much as I like accessories, I didn't want to feel obligated to buy hundreds of dollars worth of things to make me feel like a real photographer. Fortunately, I already have all but the last two items on the list, and don't need them. No money spent! I bet someone is going to reply with several other items we should all have.

Portable SSD for backing up images while traveling
Sensor cleaning kit
Portable power supply to charge devices
Memory card wallet
Intervalometer
Portable LED light - adjustable for color and output
Side strap or chest harness to carry the camera more comfortably

How are you writing to the SSD in the field?

Flattening a PDF form makes fillable fields permanent. Probably other compression in there as well.

But it seems that at some point the distance getting any farther apart without it being such a distortion as to look ridiculous.

Too little parallax and no stereoscopic information. Too much parallax and the brain doesn't interpolate the information.

Why would the cameras have to be farther apart because of distance? Our eyes don’t get farther apart when we look at something farther away.

Human stereoscopic vision is only good up to a couple hundred yards it seems. That is why rangefinders can look like this...

For a distant subject like a cloud or landscape feature, the distance between cameras would have to be scaled up to see a 3D effect.

Or you could slave both cameras to the same trigger event. It might help to give more details about your problem. What will trigger either both cameras or the first camera? Will this be unattended? Trigger based on a specific time or based on occurrence of an event? Type of terrain?

I'm thinking of 3D photo pairs of meteorological events. The trigger would be manual or perhaps some other sensor. The distance to subject could be several miles so the cameras would need to be separated by some appropriate distance. Open terrain with a similar view of the horizon.

Is there a way to synchronize shutter release on two cameras?

I'm wondering how to release the shutter at the same time on two cameras (DSLR or ML) separated by some distance, say half a mile. I assume it would need to be some kind of radio trigger to slave one camera to the other.

TIA

It's not typical but the FTZ and FTZ II relays information to the camera. I believe the Z has different protocol so there is a protocol conversion in the adapter.
The camera does know what lens it is if the lens has the chip (CPU lens). With unchipped lenses you have to enter the lens focal length and maximum aperture but the camera only knows that much and records that much in the exif. It doesn't record the actual aperture used for unchipped lenses.
The camera sets the aperture for chip lenses. The lens aperture ring if there is must be set at minimum aperture.
The camera can determine exposure for both chipped and unchipped lenses. With unchipped lenses it only works in A and M mode and it meters in stopped down mode. S and P modes require chipped lenses.
If the lens has buit in motor like AF-I, AF-S, AF-P then the lens can AF. And yes the lens must have the focus motor for AF.

I'm in the same boat with mostly manual focus F lenses (many unchipped) and looking to some ML body (Nikon/Sony/Fuji).

Aside from image quality, these are the quality of life unknowns that have me stalled out.

Do adapters typically have pass through electronics/contacts/chips etc?
Does the camera know what lens is attached as long as it is chipped?
Can you tell the camera what lens is attached for older unchipped lenses like the DSLRs allow?
Does the camera know what aperture the lens is at?
Can the camera control aperture for chipped Nikon lenses?
Can the camera determine exposure for chipped or unchipped lenses?
Do the F adapters work with autofocus lenses (except probably screw drive i suppose)? Must the lens have a focus motor?

Somebody better explain to me what constitutes a photograph. Many of us manipulate the raw image so it's almost unrecognizable from the original. Using all kinds of effects and filters and other devices built into our very sophisticated editing software (which itself uses AI). When does it become Not a photograph?

It is subjective but Lightroom is a pretty good sandbox for editing photographs with some amount of respect for the art of photography since it mostly does global edits. I've watched videos of professional photographers doing edits in Photoshop that are complete turnoffs from an integrity perspective. Granted, masking in Lightroom is pretty lame when hair or back lighting is involved.

I wasn't around for film photography but I know there were shenanigans back in the day where even prize winning photos were highly manipulated.

Where did you look?

https://zapier.com/blog/best-ai-image-generator/

---

My thought was to use it to generate concept art for a screenplay, almost like a storyboard generator. Using some of the free generators it seems that, either my ability to describe a scene in text is limited, or the volume of art which the generator is referencing is limited. I seemed to get very similar results for the rather esoteric query I posed.

I tried a couple of the free HTML based ones that others have mentioned and then also Midjourney.

Midjourney seems to be one of the most advanced. It has a free trial period before you have to pay. I thought it was only functional through a Discord server but I think I just saw that an API was released.

I'm looking around for software to generate AI "photographs" from text descriptions. I've been hearing alot about it lately but have no idea what software is being used.

Thanks all. The only similar behavior I could find on the internet was for an older model Sony 2014ish post. They suggested turning the camera off for 30s or so for the settings to stick.

I'm pretty sure I hit OK but I remember cycling the power pretty quickly after changing settings so maybe that was it. The rental lens was a new 50mm GM so I think the compatibility should have been good.

Its hard to remember exactly. I was in a panic first time to NY missed my subway stop to Penn Station ended up in a dark platform in Brooklyn.

Eventually the settings stuck and the problem went away until the next time I rented the camera and everything was default. The rental shop thought the camera might have been in a demo mode?

I rented a Sony for a couple of shows so I could use a particular lens. Both times I had issues in the first few hours getting the settings to stick. For example, I had to set it to shoot in RAW multiple times before it seemed to be a permanent setting. Similarly, I went through the entire menu putting everything where I wanted it and it took several times before it seemed to be persistent. This happened both times and the guys at the camera shop didn't know what was causing it.

Anyone else have an issue like this with the A7IV?
