There has been quite a bit of discussion here around what is and what is not done to refurbished products. Lots of people have made lots of guesses, but my recent experience tells me that most of those guesses are really wrong.

I just bought a Nikkor lens through a recent refurb sale. I'm preparing to pursue a warranty correction for a problem that is gradually becoming apparent...a small but obvious amount of looseness and slack in several of the lens's mechanisms. The lens is in excellent cosmetic condition. A careful inspection would have caught the problems. A cursory one would not.

By the way...there was a notice included in the box indicating that the first thing that should be done is to visit the NikonUSA to check whether a firmware update is needed. Not needed for a lens, but it was interesting to learn that refurbished priducts are not guaranteed to have most current firmware.

So the big question...will I buy a refurbished Nikon product again? I don't know right now. It's going to depend on how it goes in resolving this situation. Can't trust a zoom with a wiggly lens barrel.

I'm optimistic as I begin this process and will keep us posted.

HI guys, just wanted to pass on a quick addition to this post that some of you may find interesting and helpful.
There is a company that I have been using for quite a while now, which has not yet let me down, and I've used it for all kinds of refurbished products. They sell all kinds of electronics, from food processors to flat screen tvs and everything in between. The purpose here is to let you know that they sell all brands of cameras and lenses. Everything they sell is covered by a complete 12 month warranty, as well as a return policy. Their stock changes almost daily, and if you can't find what you're looking for today, they may have it tomorrow. So far I've bought 2 phones, ear-buds a tablet and a TV. Everything was "as new", with quick shipping, and no problems at all.
The company is called "Backmarket", (not BLackmarket), the spelling cought me out to begin with! Anyway, maybe this will be of some interest to some of you, and perhaps save you some money. If nothing else, it's fun to "window shop"!
Hope you all have a great day guys,
Ray.

Hi everyone. First off, I would like to thank each and every one of you for your responses, advice, ideas, help and generally the time you've taken and the kind words. When I first posted this question, I thought maybe I'd get a few short replys , (perhaps 5-10), but I never expected 5 pages! (and still counting). And they are not "short replys", they are in depth, useful, and way more informative than I ever expected. I'm completely blown away by the help and support you've given me, and this really highlights the very best of UHH and of course you guys, (what a wonderful group of people, and I wish I could think of a better way to thank you all). Unfortunately I've been somewhat unwell for a while, and have been in hospital for 3 weeks, so I've been unable to put into practice all of the ideas and suggestions that you've already given me, but rest assured that as soon as I'm able, I will. I'm glad to have been gently steered away from going out and buying a new lens for now, (I really can't afford it anyway), although the lens recommendations are useful for the future, and after reading all the posts you've sent me, it truly seems like time, practice and education will be a much better direction for me right now. Just to let you know, (I neglected to mention it before), but I do have a reasonably decent tripod that I use, and also a remote shutter release, so as far as the camera being steady, I think I have that covered, but your advice regarding settings, and taking more time learning how to use the lenses that I already have is definitely something I can spend more time on. Obviously, as I mentioned, I've been laid up for a while, so I've had plenty of time to read everything you've all posted, and made notes and done a little research as best I can.
I honestly wish I could thank each of you individually, (but there's just so many of you, and I wouldn't want to miss anyone), so my thanks are for you all.
I really don't know what else to say right now, just stay safe everyone, and I hope you all have a wonderful day!
Ray.

HI CM, I have an app that identifies birds pretty accurately, and your Pic seems to be the tropical king bird. But as you mentioned it is very similar to others except for the song. Anyway hope this helps a little, and nice shot by the way.

Ray, you have asked a question for the ages. Hopefully, you will receive many responses that assist you in your quest. You asked for guidance in selecting your next lens. My advice is too delay, or postpone a decision about a new lens. You are not ready for that choice, yet. Many of us see ourselves in your situation. We have "been there and done that." You need to "go to school." Find a source of learning and get yourself prepared for an onslaught of information and data. In 1972 I walked into an electronics toyland in Tokyo, Japan. I wanted the Minolta SRT 102. At that time the camera was state of the art equipment, it had a built-in lightmeter, and nothing else. It also came with a 50mm lens. That rig cost me $150.00 usd. For another $100.00 usd I purchased a 100mm Minolta telephoto lens. End the discussion of gear as the equipment offered then was a simple, uncomplicated choice. Today, Canon offers a lens of 16-35 mm and another of 17-40mm. Notice the numbers game we are entering? We find that the numbers in the photography industry have gotten slightly out of control. You need to go back to school and learn the differences those choices offer. The options are incredibly varied, as the lenses mentioned are quite similar numerically and need to be discussed thoroughly. I mentioned school and that is also open to discussion, there are many. Junior colleges sometimes offer courses that can be used to learn photography. A business called "CreativeLive" offers a course in nothing but Canon lenses. Some very good and experience photographers have gone into the teaching business and offer great opportunities for learning. Stop your search for a lens, there is much more valuable information to glean. Find that information and learn it. Then, the lenses offered will mean much more to you. The gear offered is only a "tool," your need is to learn as much as possible about those "tools." The more you know, the more you learn which lens or which body is THE piece you need (want) for your photographs' journey. Best wishes for you in your search, it can be very rewarding.
Ray, you have asked a question for the ages. Hope... (show quote)

HI David, thank you for your time and very thoughtful response. I've definitely taken note of your suggestions. It's all very helpful to me and led me in a new direction! All the best

Put your camera on a tripod, set it to f/8 and use a remote release to avoid touching it. Take a few images with each lens and try a few shutter speeds (although this shouldn't matter much when on a tripod). Use auto iso. I find that this is the best way to check sharpness as well as comparing 2 or more lenses. I like to focus on a book spine to see how sharp the letters are. But anything can work.

Thank you, great advice there, and I'm actually going to try that out tomorrow! All the best.

I don't know the quality of those lenses which came with your camera. but in the reviews of the lens I suggested, it's called a considerable upgrade over the lenses you're using, which would lead me to believe that their quality may not be the best. One never can rule out operator error (or lack of knowledge), but there are differences in lenses!!! Were that not so, there would be no rationale for having the reviews. I'm certainly with Paul's usual comments on that matter, but for me, a significant improvement would be worth $200, even with my financial condition being the same as yours.

Thank you again for your time Loren, I really think that the "kit lenses", while useable, and good enough to get started, they are mostly there to fill up the box when buying the new camera! I've never been impressed with the quality of the images, and I know for sure that my technique could be vastly improved, but I do think that at least one lens with decent glass would help somewhat. So thanks again!

"I would look into why your images are lacking quality / sharpness first"

In my humble opinion the lack of quality/sharpness of your images have more to do with your lack of photographic knowledge than with your gear. If I were you I would concentrate my attention in learning a little bit more about basic photography before spending my money.
One of this forum members by the name of Sylvia, also from the UK, uses Canon and almost exclusively her kit lens similar to yours for outstanding images and I am referring to the 18-55.

If there is a local camera club where you live and I am sure there is, your best bet is to join them. Explain to them what is going on with your photography and ask for help. Begin to learn some basic photography like metering and exposure and take some of your images to the club for them to evaluate and critique. I bet you are going to learn more about photography and your results will change for the better. A new lens, even a professional lens will not change the quality of the images you make now.

Thanks for the comment William, I'm definitely going to look at joining a camera club, it's great advice and something I can surely use!

So what part of the homeland are you from and what makes you remember sleepy Stokenchurch?

I had forgot about Sylvias work. Worth looking at her posts to see what can be done. I can't remember what she uses (other than Canon) but she usually lists at the end of her intro.

And I think there's a camera club in Ballboa Park. Pretty sure I saw a display of theirs in the park when we were there in 2011.

HI again John. I was born in Wimbledon, (South London), grew up in Wandsworth (again S. London), spent many years in surrey (Epsom), and lived in caerphilly (Wales) for 10 years (my happiest time) loved that place. I only know stokenchurch from traveling around the UK, but I do remember how picturesque some of it was, and wish photography was my hobby back then! Anyway, cheers again for your time and reply, have a wonderful day.
Ray. (by the way, I live about 5 miles from Balboa Park, and will definitely check out camera clubs)!

You already have most of the normal use range covered with the two lenses you have, though in just general miscellaneous shooting, I can see probably quite a lot of changing back and forth as you need to go from wide angle to telephoto. You could eliminate that with one lens - which is a superb lens, optically, with great reviews, and should be available used for around $200. It's image stabilized, and is recommended for use with your camera body. It's the Canon EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM. I can't envision a better lens per your needs. (I have one - which came with my Canon70D - and use it a lot.)

I have a Tamron 28-300 that has become my favorite walk around lens on both my Canon 5d and 6d. Bought it used on ebay when I still had a functioning 60d. Don't remember cost for sure but probably less than $350. Light, compact, and with good IQ. Not any bigger or heavier than the Canon 28-135 USM I have. Works on both ACP-S senor and FF sensor. If you are looking for one all purpose lens, something similar would be a good choice.

Thanks for the comment gh. Some good advice there, that I'll definitely keep in mind! I realize that there's no true "do it all lens", but a general walk around lens is exactly what I'm hoping for, so, thanks again, and have a great day.
