Want to by a macro lens for my Nikon D-300. Any recommendations?

I'll recommend the two that I've owned, the 60mm F/2.8 and my present one the 85mm F/3.5 VRII. I haven't used the lens much but it's extremely sharp, as was the 60mm. The biggest difference, other than the obvious focal length & speed is the VRII on the 85mm. That comes in handy as a macro when hand holding the camera. I have a D7000. I hope this helps.

Nikon_DonB I took your advice and purchased the Nikon 55-300mm VR lens. I was able to purchase it at Cord Camera in Greenwood (Indiana) for $249.00 hope I got a good deal. thanks for your recomendation....tlbuljac

Go get yourself the Nikon 55-300VR lens. I have a D3100 and the 55-300VR is a real nice piece of glass. You want the "Vibration Reduction" because the lens has a bit more weight to it than the kit lens and the VR will reduce(eliminate) camera shake that comes with long glass when handheld. It actually has a bit wider field of view than the 70.
I believe it is on sale now on Amazon for like $279. Thats a good deal(be sure it's the VR though). Good Luck

I'm new to photography and was led to believe to stay with the same equipment as the body of the camera. For example, I have a Nikon D3100 with 2 Nikon lens (18-55mm and the 55-300mm), other than price, why would I want to purchase an aftermarket lens?

Sigma, followed closely by Tokina.
20 Years ago was Tokina by a mile! Sigma has improved by leaps and bounds and Tokina has followed Tamrons lead in making increasingly slower lenses, but still has good glass!

Requests for or attempts at color correction can be more frustrating than helpful and can actually make matters worse if the requester and the helper aren't using a color-calibrated monitors. One man's yellow is another man's blue. (By the way men are frequently color-blind and, worse, Viagra alters your color perception, too! I'm just saying..)

The box below here is WHITE, i.e. 255 in all color channels - same as the 255 that blinks your camera's histogram when white is blown out.

If this box on your screen isn't WHITE, or extremely close to it then you should probably have your own monitor color-calibrated. (Hint: compare to a piece of copy paper next to your screen)

Hope this saves some frustration for members of the UHH community.

I have been trying to swithc my lenses very fast. I always put the cap on as fast as possible when switching. however, i was mistakenly doing it with the sensor facing up. It was never facing up for more than 10-15 seconds.. but i'm sure some dust might have gotten in.

Additionally, if i don't have my cleaning cloth available, sometimes i give a quick breath on the lens to clear of a smudge.

Could i have ruined anything? Also - any tips on where to buy lens cleaning supplies.. was just going to go to best buy..

Not sure if you've considered lens cleaners... most of the time a soft cloth is all you need, but for tougher stuff like smudges, I've had really good results with Purosol lens cleaner:

ve been to Hawaii 4 times and have visited all the islands at least once, but have not been since my son graduated from college in '98. If memory serves me right, Kuaii has what they call the "Grand Canyon of Hawaii". You must seek this out and you will get some great photo's. Have a great time and be sure to do some "whale watching" as they can put on a pretty good show.

NO NO NO!!
Photography in Hawaii is the most challenging location on earth! If you have never been there before you will never succeed without a photography mentor! This is absolutely essential to bringing home any good images.
I would be happy to offer my assistance in this matter free of charge. (Just cover my airfare and hotel and we will call it even!)
You have been warned! Not my fault if you go without me and don't like your shots!
