Have you noticed that when you see something that you have bought: at a cheaper price you have "over spent" But when you have massively spent on what you could have got cheaper its called an "investment".

I thought an Investment was when you put money in a bank and then they spent it for you....! AHH thats what my wife is....an investmentmmmmmmm

Hello to all uhh members.
I was having a discussion with my wife yesterday and it got me thinking about the title of this post. I had just ordered some more equipment from Adorama and amazon.I got my Diffuser yesterday and my wife asked me what that was. I explained it to her. After the explanation she made a comment to me and said you will never stop buying for your photography. Now that my 4 kids are grown up now my 2 daughters out of collage both my sons in the military I have found some new found wealth(lol). The question still stands how much is to much. My total investment so far about $20,000 over the years. Not to bad considering it is photography. :-D :-D

Sometimes in photography it's more a matter of want than need. I see you ordered a diffuser. For your flash? (Duh) My instructor uses a 3x5 index card rubber banded to his flash. He gets kidded a lot for it but it works great. He aims his flash up at a 45 degree angle and bends the card to reflect the flash toward the subject.

Started off on Photoshop as soon as I went digital. A friend got me into it. It is intimidating, no doubt, however,
so is learning to drive at first, then it becomes second nature. Adobe was obviously aware of the intimidation factor( and others) and came out with PS little brother Elements.

PS is ideally a graphic artist platform, the photographers using it had a lot to do with lobbying for Lightroom.
I use PS and Lightroom for my photography.

I know cost is a factor for some and that is understandable, however you will never know what you are missing with PS, unless you give it a try.

I do believe you should use whatever you are comfortable with and does the job for you, for me it is Photoshop.

Yes PS is expensive. I took a photo class at the local JR. college and we used PS CS5. The class I'm in now uses PS CS6. Because I'm a student I got a discount. It was less than $250.00. I figured I couldn't go wrong. I was told by a teacher in Hutchinson, KS [Dave McCane] to organize pictures in Picasa. That was years ago and I'm sure glad I did. Yes the new photo manipulations available in Picasa is really all most people need for the basics and learning PS has sure been a 'learning curve'. I got a training video [Lynda.com] that helped, but even so it's difficult to say the least. Now I find myself cutting corners and just do some quick adjustments, in RAW conversion, open the image adjust levels, and call it good. Now the teacher wants our pictures unedited. He's shooting for getting it right 'in camera'. It makes us think when we take the shot and not rely on PP as much. If we do PP we need to bring both, before and after, and list everything we did in PP. Someday I'll get Lightroom and learn it, but not in any hurry.

Well it seems that my TC no longer communicates with my camera so my 300mm lens is a little short for moon shots... but that does not mean that I can't try!

Two exposures, one exposed for the moon and one exposed for the clouds, layered and corrected in photoshop.

Thanks for the shot. My longest lens is a 250 on a crop sensor. Still a little short for the moon, but I tried last month on the full moon. Not nearly as detailed as yours. Years ago I took my x700 Minolta to the local observatory and was able to put it on the back of their 16 inch telescope. Best moon shot I ever took, but… I need to have it scanned and put on digital.

Love um. The first one may be under exposed but it may have washed out the sky with enough exposure to see details in the trees, and foreground.

I had never heard of that adage, and I completely disagree with it. I would want my one camera but four lenses, three for different focal lengths and one macro. While 60-70% of the shots are taken with one lens, a lot of the interesting shots are taken with the other lenses. I think I do much better with the four lenses than if I only had one.

Thanks for the really good reply. Which lens do you use most? I'm with you. I bought a crop sensor Canon, the upgraded kit lens, then just had to have a 55-250 zoom, a 10-22 wide angle then of course a nifty 50 (f1.4) and 60mm macro. Now I want a longer zoom. Someone asked recently what one lens would it be, if you could only have one and I didn't finish reading the replies because it would just be (for me) way to tough to decide. If I win the 400 million Wed. night, I'll be B and H and Adorama's best costumer. I'll just buy it all and give away what I don't like or use. Haha

I do not mean to be rude, but, sorry Kota, if you or anyone else thinks that there was no manipulation of images back in the heyday of film, you are all sorely misinformed or mistaken.

You need to study the careers of the likes of William Mortensen, Man Ray or Molohy Nagy. They were three of the foremost photo manipulators of the 1930s and 40s. The photo magazines of the times were filled with the debates between purists like Ansel Adams, of the "F64 Group," and the avant garde types like Mortensen. Some of the printed comments were quite vicious.

Manipulation still occurs - it just uses newer methods. In the end, who cares? The final image is all that matters. If you are making photos for use as evidence in a legal proceeding, then manipulation is a no-no. Other than that, do as you will. As for something being "dishonest," well every image is a fraud, because the photographic medium has NEVER been able to present true reality, only an imitation or a semblance of reality.

RELAX - photography is an interesting journey. Enjoy the trip.

What Giugli said but of course you have to have a mirrorless Sony.

Sony mirrorless cameras have a very short (18mm) registration distance which means there is plenty of room to accommodate an adapter for just about any lens ever made. The Metabones adapter for Canon EF gives full control of Electronic aperture, EXIF, image stabilization, autofocus so all you Canon guys can buy a Sony A7/A7r and use your lenses with the best Sensors available. Word on the street says that many Pros have alredy done so.

Sure, you got a good deal, but what kind of pictures can you expect to get with an old fashioned camera like that? :D

That high pitched whine I hear in the background might be A. Adams spinning in his grave. Haha. I always wanted the top of the line, latest Minolta when they came out in the early 80's. Couldn't afford them. The 9xi was awful cool. Now I see them for sell for 1 to 2 hundred dollars. I'm hoping the local Jr. College offers a B and W film class. They have a lot of state of the art, for it's time, darkroom equipment, donated by my current instructor, the local pro. I'b buy an old 9xi in a heartbeat. The problem comes when you need parts for your old camera. I don't think Sony is moving faster than Canon or ….. but it sure is exciting to me.
