You need to study the careers of the likes of William Mortensen, Man Ray or Molohy Nagy. They were three of the foremost photo manipulators of the 1930s and 40s. The photo magazines of the times were filled with the debates between purists like Ansel Adams, of the "F64 Group," and the avant garde types like Mortensen. Some of the printed comments were quite vicious.
Manipulation still occurs - it just uses newer methods. In the end, who cares? The final image is all that matters. If you are making photos for use as evidence in a legal proceeding, then manipulation is a no-no. Other than that, do as you will. As for something being "dishonest," well every image is a fraud, because the photographic medium has NEVER been able to present true reality, only an imitation or a semblance of reality.
