Not really typically an insulter but I sold two nikon bodies, 5 lenses and a bellows, two flashes and some filters because i was getting out of photography! Could not take it and got back in three weeks later with a canon and two lens and a lash. Been a canon user for the past several years. I still do photography with my Nikon buddies and we lean on each other about it but it is all in good fun - - - i think !!

NO -- you think incorrectly. Nikon owners and all other owners HATE each others GUTS ! Why ? Nikonners are a bunch of snobs whose motto is " I own a Nikon and you don't". So they are easy to hate. On the other hand Nikonners hate everybody else because we burst their bubble about their own innate (and imagined) superiority.

When you say "dirt cheap", you're actually dealing with two very different categories.

There are the cheaply made variety, with poor optical performance and comparatively flimsy, less than precise construction.

Then there are those that are not cheaply made, but are older, manual focusing lenses that can be found for little money if you know where and how to look. For example, a 1980's 400mmm Nikkor lens. Optically, a decent performer, and certainly not cheap when it originally came out. If used correctly, it will yield excellent results.

Nikon, Nikkor, Nikon. Its always Nikon. Broaden your horizons people. Maybe there's an old Canon, or an old Pentax, etc etc. a

You should have come up with this a few years ago, when I had a brand new Sigma 50-500 and I would have send it to you for free (instead I threw it away),.....but that was quite a while ago. I don't think you will find anything you wishing for, for the money you mentioned!

Any chance it could still be in the garbage can ?

Good observation. Should we separate the discussion topics here?

Focal length (500mm) has its own issues. Reflex vs Refractive is a separate (orthogonal but related ) issue. Fixed aperture vs variable aperture is another consideration.

There are many variables, and some are in different spaces.

Thoughts?

You think too much. Point the camera and click the shutter.

Graybeard, I'll sell you my 800mm Charmin f4.5 for $75 and throw the camera in for free.
Yes, but that photo was taken over 20 years ago so it's not in as good a shape now.

Charmin? Was that the toilet paper company looking to get into the lens market ? A real tempting offer..... let me think it over. Is that $75 firm or negotiable ?

Just a thought. I think that this will be a fun adventure. As I suggested in another post, check the "junk bins" in local camera stores, if there are any around you. This may also require the use/purchase of an older camera like my Pentax Spotmatic from the early 70s. For current digital use, there are those that can make/provide lens mount convertors. Good luck & have fun. Let us know what you end up with and show some photos! I love my expensive stuff too, but photography should also be fun.

When I started this subject, it was for nothing more than what I stated at the time: dirt cheap 400-500mm lens. But now it has grown into more - I want to prove that some lenses of that ilk can produce decent and acceptable (to all but the cognesceti) images. I don't even know that I will find that out. Maybe I will find out I have nothing more than a club to dish out blunt force trauma on the Nikon snobs who are laughing at me. We will see.

Dear Graybeard:
You know what you want. Don't be deterred by the voices of doom. Remember that half of the fun of photography is creativity and the hunt. Enjoy your search and when you find the lens that you like, let us know. Hit the photo flea markets. Your lens is out there. Good luck.

You got the right idea. See you at the flea market. Hope the lens don't have any fleas in it.

One shouldn't give up so easily. You'd be surprised how often a photographer dies, and a family member without a clue as to its worth, sells off all the equipment for peanuts. The trick is to get to the goods before anyone knowledgeable takes notice.

I would feel like a vulture, waiting for somebody to die so that I could benefit by it. I hate it when they say "estate sale". But I check them out anyway.

I'm a snob and I shoot Canon.

I shoot Canon too, but Canon snobbery is newer and just evolving. It is not old and set in concrete. Perhaps Canon snobbery will be positively influenced by the wise, talented, and egalitarian. That is, people like you and me. Er, I'm not so sure of you.

I think you may have missed some posts. I support this also, even though I own tens of thousands of dollars of Nikon equipment. One of my treasures is my 70's Pentax Spotmatic with 50mm Super Tackmar (sp?). Meter is off about 10 stops, but the film advance, my finger, still works. AS I said, this sounds like a very fun project, I for one, would like to hear more about as it develops.

In the interest of fairness, I realize some Nikon owners, perhaps even as high as 1%, are nice people who do not look down at the rest of the world. Thanks for your support.

I have both a 400mm and a 500mm preset lens. Both work well enough if I have time and a tripod. Neither can really be handheld even mounted on a Pentax K100d (a really old 6mp camera) with in-camera stabilization. I set the camera to "A", aperture priority, set ISO in full sun to 200-400 and let the camera set shutter speed. On cloudy days I set the ISO to 800. I shoot in RAW and pp to get the most.

Both lenses produce sharp images if I get the focus right. I have better luck near infinity where I can just back the focus off a little. The 400mm produces better images than the 500mm. I paid $.99 (99 cents) for the 500mm, and $9.00 for the 400mm on ebay, plus postage.

I have posted images from both on this site.

That shot of the eagle is terrific. 99 cents ? That should be my new goal. Best lens for 99 cents or less. Thanks for all of your procedural info.

What type camera are you looking to buy lenses for? I have about six excess Nikon DSLR lenses I am thinking of selling.

Sorry, I wouldn't buy a Nikon lens. I am afraid it might contaminate my equipment with snobbery.
