Seems like sharpness carries a lot of weight for an image to most people. Do you really need all of the sharpness for portraits? What if a subject has lots or wrinkles and skin imperfections? What about shot composition? What about exposure and lighting? What about being able to sharpen in PP? What about out of focus? You can't fix "out of focus" in PP.

To me sharpness is just one element of many for producing nice images. IMO, there should be more emphasis on composition.

When I hear this lens is sharper than this lens, I'm thinking sharpness doesn't mean much if there's bad composition, bad exposure, bad focus, too much noise, etc. I've come to the conclusion Sharpness in over emphasized.

Almost every element you mention is subjective - especially now in this digital age (PP). Once upon a time, there were fixed standards. No longer. We can digitally manipulate any image to our liking. But, IMHO, the one non-variable, the one constant is....ta da, focus. Or sharpness if you like. And even that we can mess with. But we have to start somewhere and I would think that focus might be the very last consideration before depressing that shutter button.

I went out for bagels this morning and walked into thick fog. So I turned around and grabbed my camera. My wife wanted to know "what is up?" Fog, I'll be about an hour or so with the bagels. All of these were done with my 11-16 and on a tripod. As soon as I set out, I knew that I would convert them all to black and white. It was just that kind of morning. Hope you like these.

Beautiful, and impressive depth of field.

[quote=Carolina Wings]I love to watch these young Eagles learning future skills as they play :-D

Spectacular. And you showed enviable poise in capturing these wonderful images. I'd say you exhibited proper respect for Ansel's famous quote.

Hi Bob!
This one took longer than I thought it would. Of course, this was my first try. The longer I played with it, the more interesting it became.
The real challenge was knowing when to let well enough alone.

Knowing when to say "enough" is that fine line we're all looking for. But it is sure elusive.

Thank you so much for the great review!
The only gear was my canon point and shoot and PSE 12.

In that case, double wow.

Wow. Beautiful. Very nice PP. I'll take one 24 X 36 canvas - don't worry about the frame. What were the settings, and your gear?

coreyhully, your collection is one of the most impressive I've ever seen on this site, b/w or color. So awe-inspiring, I think I'll throw in the towel on my humble pictorial aspirations.

Almost every response was thoughtful and creative. I'm not surprised, considering the outstanding caliber of contributors.
Remember, my friend was not including lenses in his comment but I have to say, I agree with all of you. Thanks.

I was recently told by a pro photog I respect, that regarding landscapes (and maybe other scenarios), there was little difference in DSLRs, regardless of $$$ when certain criteria were observed:
1) Use of a tripod; 2) F-stop "sweet-spot" (f-8); 3) Manual focus and 4) use of shutter release cable.
Is his message is too simple?

Wow dfalk, wonderful stuff. We did the same trip a couple years ago but not exactly the same way or getting the same shots you did. I shot from the rail of an excursion boat over the heads of 20 other like-minded touristos. No. I won't show you mine.

Actually, as far as changing automotive design is concerned, it's all relevant. As an aging old fart and GM nut, I owned at least a half-dozen of these cars and, except for my beloved Corvettes, I always saw myself coming and going on the streets - just like today.

By making the photo contests submissions taken only during current times you have created intended and unintended consequences. You have tried to make people go out and shoot more = good. The photos on the whole are of lesser quality and fewer entries then when photographers could submit from their archives = bad. I feel you should take a vote to see what type of photo contests the HOG readers would prefer.

Amen.
