Here is my first Snowy Owl flight images. In over 50 years of shooting this is the first time to be in the right place right time and be ready. I used my D3s and my 600mmF:4 G VR to get the shots.

Outstanding set of pictures

Mike, that is precious. However, she needs boots to go with that suit. Perhaps, she could also use a hat.

We bought boots for one of our dogs and they didn’t last long. It was like watching “The Ministry of Silly Walks” (Monty Python for those that aren’t as old as I am)😆 then they got chewed!

Budget is high up on my list. As aforementioned, my projection is that it will be used sparingly.
I just want to have the ready capability if the need arise as my present gear have reached their limit.
Thanks for joining the discussion.

I keep my Sigma 150-600 on my camera 90 percent of the time because birds and wildlife may not wait for me change from one of the kit lenses ( I have a Canon T6i ). Here a shot of a Great Horned Owlet a day or two after it fledged the nest.

I bought a Sigma 150 - 600 mm Contemporary zoom last year and have been happy with it. It was the only lens with 600mm reach that fit my budget so that was the deciding factor in my choice.

I loved Picasa -- but, now it is gone. I have struggled with the Google alternate and it is a P.I.T.A.

Any good choices out there? I love having access on my phone to Google Photos, but am still looking.

All our computers run on Linux ( Mint Linux) so all software and the OS are free and open source. For photo editing I use RawTherapee, Darktable, Gimp and because I’m learning how to do deep sky astrophotography I use Siril to stack multiple images and do some basic editing after stacking. Many of the major Linux distrobutions include Gimp as part of their software bundle that loads with the OS. Almost any software you need can be loaded with the software manager, try it and if you don’t like it uninstall and find an alternative. Most of the photo softwares that come from Linux have Windows and Mac versions.

I'd like to get a nice image of a nebula. From what I've been reading, I'll need a Equatorial Mount but I don't know much more than that.

Here's the equipment that I currently own:
Nikon D600 with a 590nm filter conversion
Nikon D750
Nikon 50mm f/1.8
Nikon 85mm f/1.4
Nikon 105mm f/2.8
Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3
Irix 15mm f/2.4
One nice tripod and two crappy ones
Pluto Trigger

I have enjoy doing star trails and I wanted another way to use my equipment in the night.

What else should I buy?

If you like to tinker (build things) you can look into making a barn door. There are a lot of different designs on the internet.

This is my version. They are well suited to Milky Way shots but with care I have used mine with my Sigma 150 600 generally at about 200 mm. I use a green lazier point laid along the end of the upper board and the hinders for polar alignment.

After reviewing on Google maps I think were you turned off Temple Mt Rd we continue about 5/8 miles on Temple Mt Rd. Some stretches of the road were a bit of a white knuckle ride, partly washed out and sloping into the maze of small canyons not a place to go with a big camper. It was beautiful and very quiet. This is myself and my daughter in camp.
