Re the county courthouse: There is no Columbia County in Wash., but there is one in Oregon, with its county seat in St. Helens, OR. I can't imagine how you found the tiny village of Dayton WA; I had to look it up as I'd never heard of it.

BTW, the courthouse is tilting to the right, but Oregon carpenters are obviously of questionable skill.

This is exactly what to do. All else is useless gibberish.

It's my old bugaboo, but verticals need to be vertical. The lighthouse and its flagpole appear ready to fall over.

Regarding the fence, I really like the contrast of the modern fence and paved road with the century-old horse and buggy.

Superb portraits. And, B&W is perfect for these.

Shouldn't the buildings be vertical, instead of tilting to the right?

Besides other comments, it might help if the Empire St. Bldg. was actually vertical.

That's it - "solarization." I used to do it on high-contrast, B&W prints. Then, with access to a color darkroom, I tried it on color prints also. Very weird and "groovy" - and I didn't have to use any pharmaceuticals.

I could not read the description of the uniform. Can you write it out.

"This Dress White Captain's uniform was worn by USS Midway's final commanding officer, Captain Larry L. "Pappy" Ernst, who commanded from June to August, 1993."

The Midway was the first carrier built post WWII. I spent four days aboard her in 1971, while she was on Vietnam War duty. (I was part of an F-4 USAF/Navy aircrew exchange, but didn't get any flight time as we were being chased around the South Chine Sea by a typhoon. The Midway was well known for being a real rock-and-roller.) Got some pix somewhere and will share when I find them.

Beautiful shot (love the sky). I wonder if a slightly different position would better show off the red, covered bridge. It would be a nice addition to an otherwise perfect pic.

Clearly, your depth of field with those settings is much too shallow. Increase ISO, reduce shutter speed and close down the aperture to f/11. And, as I've mentioned before, a camera-mounted LED light bank will increase available light without adding unwanted shadows. Very useful for all macro photog.

Very nice shots. Is the Macah Reservation (including Neah Bay) now open to non-residents? It's been closed to outsiders since early last year.

Depends. This "rolling shutter" issue, previously called focal plane distortion in film cameras, was first noticed with early, mechanical focal plane shutters. ... Vertical, multi-curtain focal plane shutters in modern cameras may travel across the frame at something like 1/400 second. This greatly reduces the kind of distortion we're talking about.

Thanks. Best, most informative answer to the OP's question we've had, especially as it doesn't talk about the relative flexibility of golf clubs and tennis racquets.

Some of the best pix I've seen of that much-photographed beach. I especially like #1, with the lone bird at the left.
